I'd recommend the £600 Asus 14 inch ryzen 5 here as it's a much more premium all-metal build, better quality ips screen and lighter / more portable

14 inch is still a decent size to work on.

there is not much difference between the ryzen 5 and 7 mobile chips and not noticeable day-to-day

Thanks for the reply glasso, that's a sleek looking laptop. I'm coming from a 17inch slab of a laptop so I was thinking 15.6 inch minimum for the new laptop.

ok. then the Vorke in the this thread from geekbuying is a better proposition than your suggestion

see youtube review in the thread. better build and screen (ips vs tn) than lenovo. also more expandable. and cheaper. the 4-core intel i5 is stronger on the pure cpu side than the ryzens by a bit.

but I would argue that 14inch is perfectly fine for working on and despite your reservations you would adapt in a day- have you ever used one? you do know that it's a diagonal measurement so the difference is not as big as you think.

that asus is a lovely machine. you'll get an extra kick out of it just 'cos it looks so good!

Yeah the asus does look like a quality laptop. I'd have to see if I can get a look at one in the flesh before pulling the trigger. Thanks very much for your help.

don't think that it's in stock in any of the big chains in Ireland tbh. there is a very similar model in pcworld that would give you a good idea

(the one on amazon for less is actually a slightly higher spec - thinner bezels)
