I currently have a Passat and was looking to change and came across the skoda superb and took an instant liking to it, more room spec etc and also an automatic

Be interested to hear if anyone has made this transition

A friend of mine made that switch two years ago and he's delighted with the Superb.

He's gone from Mercedes to Passat to Superb over the last four years and he's just bought a new 2020 Superb automatic and he's very fussy about colours, interior etc. He's not short a few bob and doesn't care about badges. Prefers the Superb by far.

I had a Sportline 2.0 TDI 2018. Great spec, loads of space and with the sports suspension and 19’s handled well. Economical, cheap to service and reliable. Was v happy to do 700km in a day in it

Mine suffered from a few too many squeaks and rattles which was annoying. Overall I think the tactile quality of the previous model was better. The Passat suffers the same rattles too especially the sunroof

I went from a petrol B7 Passat to an F10 5 series to a current Superb (SE 1.4tsi 150). The Superb is better than the Passat in every way. It may miss some of the interior flourishes and chrome touches that the Passat had but it is more comfortable, far more spacious, well equipped, great infotainment, feels better built, super refined, it is also quick and frugal.

It really is an amazing car and I can't imagine what I would replace it with. Liked it so much we bought two.

My wife has the same car (with DSG), and with that gearbox the engine is even more refined and frugal than my manual.

B7 is the old model Passat? Facelift of the 2005 B6 model?

    Yes, 2011.

I have the Superb Sportline Eest with DSG and the 190BHP.
    Bought it in 2017.
I had 2 VRs before that, a Mondeo ST, Mazda MPS so I've had a mix.

Zero issues with the car. Really solid, responsive when needed and pretty decent in the MPG (around 40-45).
I travel 180km round trip to work 3 days per week.
The boot and backseats are full of space. The build quality is really good.

I genuinely have no complaints with it. Well maybe the glove box is too small! :D

I’ve had two Superb Combis over recent years. Generally good, comfortable cars and very spacious. However I’ve never had a car with so many rattles and squeaks. It would put me off buying another if I’m honest. I thought I was unlucky with the first one but the second was exactly the same (maybe even worse). I don’t think they are as well made as they used to be. I drive a Mercedes now and there is no comparison between the build quality.

I also had a problem with the first Superb where it broke down one morning (less than a week old). Had to be recovered and it turned out to be rodent damage with the pipes in the turbo. Initially Skoda didn’t accept liability and tried to charge me but eventually they did. I asked to see the damaged pipes but they had already discarded them! I googled it and it seems a problem with Skoda cars and where they store them.

I’m considering buying a Superb estate. Coming from a GTi, I want a petrol with a decent amount of power so I’m looking at the 2.0 TSI (272PS) model, but I can only see them for sale in the UK. Does anyone know if that model is sold here?

It was sold here until the facelift was launched but only tiny numbers - I’ve never seen one for sale second hand. They are great value in the UK for 2019’s if you were prepared to import.

I've never seen a petrol superb tbh. It's all diesel here in the stix, I'd say the 2 litre petrol would be a lively car. I wonder how the dreaded nox tax affects them?

Nox won’t badly impact them, might be 300 quid. They had two 2.0 petrols - 220ps was never sold here but the 272/280 was along DSG and Four wheel drive - not sure but think it’s the same setup as the Golf R and performance would be ahead of a standard GTI

Bet you aren't in Wexford... I'm considering the iv for my next car, either a superb or the new Octavia. I'd say the petrol superb is super quiet, what engines/ transmission have you got? The 1.5 DSG gets great reviews.... L&K yum yum.... Sorry I drifted off into lotto land there:D:D

Both 1.4tsi 150 Act, UK SE models. One manual, one DSG. Super quiet, fast when needed and frugal, 6.5l/100. The petrol feels so much more premium than the diesel, no diesel clatter going on. Best car I've ever owned by far.

I had the 122 / DSG version in an Octavia by far the nicest car I ever had, never went below 40 mpg, best achieved was 47.

Aye, it’s the same EA888 that’s in the R, albeit with a different map. It’s a good bit heavier than a GTi but with more power so performance figures pretty evenly matched.

I just did some digging around online and found the Superb price list for Ireland - https://az749841.vo.msecnd.net/sitesenie/alv1/20b406db-95f6-4cd1-b410-081632333eb6/SUPERB%20MY20%20Jan%202020%20Product%20Guide_16%2001%202020.9d5b38d0a4cd741ef04ae6a0028ac335.pdf

The 2.0TSI 272 doesn’t appear anywhere on the list, so I assume Skoda doesn’t sell it new here anymore:(

The only other petrol option is the 1.5TSI. An estate with DSG weighs 2091kg. A 1.5 litre, 150bhp engine in a car of that size is just wrong. That’s a shade under 71bhp per ton. The moped I had when I was 16 had a much better power to weight ratio than that!

This really is car hating country:(

In fairness to Skoda they listed the 280bhp up to this year but it’s the market has sealed their faith as they didn’t sell

Great pricing in the UK if buying used - 2019 with less than 4K miles for 23 grand. Haven’t checked vrt but even if it’s 10k it’s a lot of motor for the money

Come on now, I know people who buy Skoda seem to have some sort of love affair, but your pushing it a little far if you think a Skoda is better to a Merc or even an Audi. They are not even in the same ball park

To the OP, look at both and drive both of them. Even if you have to drop a year to get into the Passat in same price bracket. Make sure similar spec on both and see what you like

The pro Skoda camp in here is crazy. At the end of the day no matter what is posted here, Skoda is the budget line for VW. I will be shot down now but it is simply the truth. Even the Seat line for VW would be more premium. Look at the recent thread about Tarraco etc.....

Next thread will be how great my Skoda is I sold a Ferrari :-)

Have you owned or driven a Superb? If not I can appreciate your skepticism. But they are cars the do blur the lines between mainstream and premium. It also depends on what you mean by "better", which is very subjective.

I changed my F10 BMW for one and have found the following:

The Skoda is better in the following areas:
    Rides better, very compliant
Handles better (far less boat like feel)
Engine is quieter (petrol V diesel)
So much more refined at idle, the N47 is like a tract by comparison
    More spacious by far
    Better sound system and infotainment
More practical (standard folding seats, had an interior door in the Superb the other day, forget that in the BMW)
    Cheaper servicing and maintenance
Superb has proved much more reliable, no work required other that servicing. The BMW at 4 years old had over €3000 worth of warranty work before the EGR recall. Rear anti roll bar was corroded as were the doors (repainted under warranty).

The BMW was better in the following areas:
Beautiful interior (though no more comfortable than the Superb)
Fewer interior rattles and better materials inside
    Better suspension isolation

So for me, subjectively, the Superb is the better car of the two and I haven't missed the BMW for a day. This is not fanboi'ism, just an honest assessment of both cars. For some the badge will be enough to overlook a cars shortcomings, and if the car makes you feel good, that is fine too.

But just because a car costs more, and has a premium badge, does not automatically make it 'better'.

And I'd say of that but the other way around after experience with an F10 and 2 F30s compared to my old Superb Sportline.

It's swings and roundabouts with any car, majority are absolutely fine but you get an iffy one every so often. I still think the MK3 superb has been very noticeable built to a price though.

I had a bride once who chose a superb over a Flying Spur because of the rear space difference. She got the pics in the Bentley but travelled in the Skoda.
    True story.

Never owned, driven plenty as they seem to be the favorite rental car/garage car. Between it and the Octavia I had had a fair few.

Not a car I would ever say is better to an Audi/BMW or a Merc, maybe I have different requirements to other people.

Have had 2 Audis and 5 Skodas.
The Superb equates to the A4 and surpasses it for spec and build.

I'm sure it depends on the spec. I was in a Superb Sportsline a few weeks back, and it was gorgeous. I was in the bosses A6 previously, and the sportsline had my vote.

What's sportline like to sit in? Are they very hard on the road like the vrs? I found the vrs very uncomfortable on back roads.

Nah they are totally different, none of that tump tump over bumps you get with the old VRS or older A4 S-Lines or M Sports. Occasionally on a v bad road I worried for the 19’ alloys but never even marked them. The seats I found great but maybe not great for somebody v large

Had 2 VRs and now this Sportline and agree with that. The VRs is much more solid, holds the corners better, but thats to be expected.
I have the combi and its a lump, but I'd never feel like its gonna go on a corner.

I drive s8t88te roads on the days I work in Galway from Westport.

Funningly enough my young lad got sick more in the VRs and has yet to in the Superb.
If your down my neck of the woods then you are welcome to drive mine. Actually selling it but not for the reason I don't like the car.

I looked at the new Superb hybrid but its crazy expensive to get the spec i have in this Sportline.
