Vagrant Queen follows Elida (Adriyan Rae) from child queen to orphaned outcast as she scavenges the treacherous corners of the galaxy, always one step ahead of the Republic government that seeks to extinguish her bloodline. When her old friend Isaac (Tim Rozon) shows up claiming her mother, Xevelyn, is still alive, they head off with their new ally, Amae (Alex McGregor), to stage a rescue that will put the fugitive royal right back in the perilous heart of her former kingdom — and pit her against a deadly old rival, Commander Lazaro (Paul du Toit).

The tone of the one-hour adventure series is described as a “fun, violent, snarky, space opera.”

Love a good crackpot syfy show from Syfy and this looks like it will fit the bill from that trailer.

I was going to snark that it looks like utter trash, trying way too hard to be cool, but then Killjoys was pretty godawful for the same reasons at the start, but grew into one of my favourite summer shows. So who knows, maybe this will be the space ragtag replacement

Syfy UK has it starting on Wednesday April 15th at 9pm

Just at the end of writing this post I came back to the top cos I thought it'd be good to highlight that there's a level of violence in this show that might not be appropriate for younger kids.

    anyway..

1: Well. That was wierd and different and well.. this sounds pretty close..
a good crackpot syfy show from Syfy

It's so strange. It feels a bit Saturday morning but then lumps in very Violent scenes right from the begining.
The budget seems quite low and is felt in some places like the computer generated imagery but there has been some top effort put into practical effects.

The physical fight choreography isn't great but feels like it fits to the show.
Some things kinda felt like they clicked together at the start of the final action scene when the subtitles said "[dreamy '80s synth music plays]" :D
This really does have an 80s feel to it.. but not like Stranger Things 80s feel.. like those 80s scifis with the practical effects and dreamy '80s synth music :D

I dunno about the acting and story. It's early days and this hasn't been hyped up to be too serious so I think I'll give it a shot for a bit.

2: You know.. the death, blood, gore, torture  (
    Nim committing suicide
), cannibalism and general horror-ness of some of the scenes in this are really at odds with the feel of the show. Some of the ideas they are going with feel inspired by .. well .. the more horrific parts of the Mad Max universe feel.

Then the rest has that whole song feel and the whole combo just feels a bit wierd

    anyway.. karaoke..

It looks like a show where the studio saw Borderlands and went "yeah, let's do that, with more sass!"

I'm kind of liking it just for the pure stupid joy they all seem to be having.

3: Some very daft and silly and gross bits! lol, I was like 'oh, that's a bit game of thrones'
    when he overheard the conversation
but then threw the eyes in the air when he went 'meh'. Still though.. feels a right bit saturday morning-ish

I never got Killjoys. Just got totally lost as to what it was supposed to be about and just did not like it. Dark Matter on the other hand was Brilliant and deserved a few more seasons. Its criminal how they kept ''Killjoys'' and let ''Dark Matter'' go. It should have been the other way around.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Huh. I thought they got it about right. Never took to Dark Matter, thought it was a shotgun of generic sci-fi tropes mashed together with no real coherence - or budget. One bottle episode after another, never going anywhere interesting. When did you drop out of Killjoys cos it definitely had growing pains.

Watched this today and have to some of it is very good and other parts look very cartonish or comic like but that is maybe the point. It had some humour in it from the of which is good and not afraid to kill of characters either. Its seems fun so I will stick with it for now.

4: That.. well you know.. Vagrant Queen. Fun episode.
    The torture again though!
Then some hearty moments at only episode 4.

Apparently the ratings for this have been atrocious, SyFy looking to move broadcast away from PrimeTime for what's regarded as a "burn off" of episodes. Looks like another one for the SyFy graveyard.

That kinda makes sense. It's trying to fit into a lot of places all at the same time and I'd guess maybe it's putting off audiences who'd watch it if it went in one direction or another.

Checked wiki and looks like it's losing between 26k to 100k viewers per episode:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vagrant_Queen
    1: 375
    2: 310
    3: 208
    4: 182

    5: Wow,
so that's a huge chuck of the group dead or splitting up.
The show just wandering along and then suddenly Bunny Rabbit Ripped apart by vines.. or Group member torn limb from limb! I guess again that feels like an audience splitter.
Yer man has the ster..star.. .. he has the orb. Looks like it controls minds so I'm guessing that's the end of the republic and beginning of a civil war between his new mind-control-empire and the republic.

I liked the special effects of Jupiter and the story work of how the temple/station had been overcome by the desert.

6: Decent episode. Some hearty scenes. I like the feel of their ship. Then the usual  bits with the
mind control dinner slaughter (Dark Knight nod?) and jumping off the balcony and mother head wound

7: Ah! So kinda backstory development. Liked the way the train was done. It's like they've got the practical and special effects engine as sorted as they need it. Again the  bits,
    especially the fingers!
    That last scene
with the traffic wardens! Ah that was daft!

    This is so stupidly fun.

The door bell and The Cluedo weapons this week made me laugh so much a full episode of Cluedo in space.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    8: Sidequest!
    Knives out meets Aliens!
The gore bits still feel a bit off for a show like this.

I have to say I did not like that episode at the beginning thought it was utterly stupid for the 20 mins or so was even going to stop watching it but it got better then. Still not the best episode do. There was another episode that was not great so two dudes so far. Most episodes have been very good with great character development and the back stories for Elida and Isaac. I think they could do with a few more crew do.

Hopefully someone else picks it up. I thought it was getting better as it went along. I think it just came out at a very bad and unfortunate time with the World in a mess and a downturn and less Americans able to afford to pay for cable etc. I was looking forward to Season 2. Syfy is getting a bad as Fox for dropping shows.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.
