Should I stay quiet or ask to reduce hours?

So, today is day 3 of 5 this week that My supervisor has given me no work. The work, when is comes, has been intermittent for about 3 weeks now, and I’ve had enough. The job is a cleanroom job, so I don’t have the luxury of being able to leave the room and find something to do. I am actively looking for another job, but in the meantime am I able to ask for reduced hours? Is social welfare able to prop me up if, after I get sent home on the days with no work, my hours worked drop to part-time? Or should I sit tight, be quiet & be thankful of living the lazy dream?
