I'm on disability allowance for mental health reasons. I am aware that a person on disability allowance can only be out of Ireland for two weeks.

If I got a note from a doctor stating that sunshine benefits my mental health would it be possible for me to claim disability allowance while staying in Spain.

She'll be grand, you should also ask them for some extra spending money to cover your holiday and expenses.

    Two to three months.

You can ask but the doctor should refuse to write such a letter. Even if there was a seasonal affective component to your illness the appropriate treatment would be to source funding for photo therapeutic lighting, not three months in Spain while claiming disability.

Lots of things would benefit us all but that doesn’t mean they meet the level to warrant exemptions from requirements to be resident in the country in order to receive benefits from the country.

With that said GPs are often a soft touch and write these letters in order to avoid being complained about.

You can only claim DA when you live in Ireland. You loose it when you leave the state. So anything your doctor might write would be of no benefit to you.

You might have some chances if you were on DB. That is a non means tested payment and some folks are also getting it while being outside of the state

The short answer is no, you can only claim DA while living in ireland, if you leave the state for several months you lose your entitlement and then need to reapply when you come home.

Your doctor can write anything they want but itll only see you being cut off fromthe day you leave the state

No. You are entitled to two weeks holiday pay.

So go away for three months, but you'll still only have two weeks pay when you get back..

You can go for as long as you like, but you'll only be paid for two weeks of it.
