Turbo could be on the way out

When the turbo went in my 320d a few years ago, it sounded like police sirens going off around me!!

I’d be getting the Turbo looked at....

Id be getting that checked out asap. Could be anything. If its loud, then I would give your mechanic a shout before driving it again. Its very difficult to get proper advice on here about a noise from car without people hearing it. Err on the side of caution in case you are causing damage by driving it.

How much does it cost to get the turbo done?

Car went into limp mode this evening and then power completely went and smoke from exhaust and engine presumably the turbo is gone?

Turbo is most likely gone..cost me north of €4,000 7 years ago, but that was at a main stealer... unfortunately options were limited on the morning it happened, and we were close to the dealer in question!!

Mine went out in Navan, and I managed to nurse it into the M50, but there was lots of smoke, and they remarked I was lucky to make it in without totalling the engine due to all the oil that was burnt.

Then they replaced the turbo, they couldn't start the engine due to loss of compression in a cylinder, and I feared the worst, but it turned out to be the head gasket. Car (e90) had about 170,000km's on the clock when it happened.

On an '07 car it's would be a 50/50 on whether it is worth repairing the car or scrap it and replace.

If its €4000 to repair then that's it, kaput. Never know, you might get a good few months more driving out of it if you just drive it on regardless and sure let it whine away until it blows.

This seems to be a standard response from you. I'd be interested to know how many cars you have personally driven to destruction.

I've been driving nearly 16 years now. So far I've only driven one car to destruction, a Punto that I drove for 9 years. Now on my second car, an Almera, which is 5 years into its abuse. I drove it with a bad noisy gearbox for 6 months until it finally imploded in a hail of oily shrapnel in November. Only for I was able to pick up a spare gearbox for €100 I'd have scrapped it. I expect to get another few years driving from it.

Cheapest motoring ever. Absolutely great value for my investment, and the cost of ownership is very very minimal. It is a good strategy imho, and a lot more financially sound than some of the spendthrift and extravaganly expensive advice given on here sometimes.

And can I ask what is the problem with driving it on with a whine until the car stops? Is that not the best way to sweat the asset as much as possible. At the end of the day, the whining part is knackered either way. Might as well drive it on as long as possible and defer the repair cost for add long as possible.
Sometimes a noisy or whining part may last a long long time. People were telling me my gearbox was gone. Ya it was, but it soldiered on another 10,000km or so before it finally blew itself to pieces.

    Best value for your money.
