Wife rerouted - can she claim for the overnight?

So I'll try and be as succinct as possible.

Wife was booked to fly to Linkoping. Flight was cancelled so KLM rerouted her to Gothenburg. No joy getting through to KLM via various means (telephone, social media etc.) eventually she sorted it out at the airport and they booked her on a flight from Amsterdam to Linkoping the following morning. This meant an unplanned overnight in Amsterdam, although she was always going to have to fly to Amsterdam for the connection.

Can she claim for the overnight?
Can an Airline just reroute you to an airport 3 hours away from your destination airport?
Did they just do the reroute to avoid a refund?

Any info / advice is most welcome. This is the first time we've really had to deal with anything like this.
