Hello, I was hoping that someone who knows something about cars would be able to help me out here.
We have a Citreon Picasso as the family car. Went in for service before Christmas. Needed brake rod done and that was pretty much it.
However since getting the car back it is very sluggish when starting up after being idle for a long time.

So in the morning , I'd turn it over and it would cut out straight away. Then I'd turn it over and give it a bit of gas and it would be alright until I take me leg off the accelerator and it would cut out again.
If I take it for a drive, it will cut out when I take my leg off the accelerator to slow down . This will only happen 2 or 3 times and after that the car is grand. Drives away no problems.
It's been to 2 different mechanics who say the car is fine. Sparks plugs and sensors have been replaced.

What I have been doing recently is turning the key as far as to switch on the battery, pausing for a few seconds and then turning all the way and it starts up 100% of the time but is still prone to cutting out the first or second time I slow it down. So Ive also now taking to clinging the clutch to the floor as soon as I take me leg off the accelerator and the car feels like its going to die but 9 times out of 10 it'll stay running. Funny if I sit in it for a long time with it in neutral it will splutter occasionally but then you can hear/feel the engine picking up and everything is fine.

Anyone on here have this before or could point me in the right direction. Keeping in mind its been hooked up to 2 separate computers to look for errors during start up and none have shown up.

Is the car petrol or diesel? I realise you say that one of the mechanics said the spark plugs are fine but maybe they were referring to the glow plugs.

    Its a Diesel.
This morning, completely frozen over. Waited for battery lights and then turned it, wouldn't start.
Tried again, this time giving it gas and it started. So I have to sit in it while it thaws (Im not one for pouring water over window). I have the accelerator slightly pressed, if I go to take my leg off, I can feel the engine wanting to cut out.
Once it thaws out , I take off no problem, get to the end of the street where theres a stop sign. As I start to slow down , I can feel the engine wanting to die (headlights starting to dim etc), so I floor the clutch and bring the car to a stop, the engine does not cut out and I put the car in neutral and everything is hunky dory. No further issues on the commute to work.
I can control it to a certain degree however Im frustrated as 2 different mechanics have handed it back saying theres no issue.

Glow plugs, battery, alternator, dirty air filter or fuel filter, so much could be the issue.... Sensor issues could be another.

    Any light showing on dash?

What year, what's driving style and distance traveled normally.

When you got it serviced was the diesel filter changed do you know. There is a possibility it might not be making a perfect seal and allowing a tiny amount of air into the diesel system, which will give the problems you describe on any diesel engine.

i had a car years ago with something similar ....adjusting the accelerator cable a touch fixed it....but i dont think you can do that on more modern cars these days...would that be right ?

    How old is the battery?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 194 ✭✭seoirsem

Filters have been done, I've read about the accelerator cable somewhere else. Would not the mechanics have picked up on this?? I'd imagine the battery is fairly old, she's a 1999 car.
Thanks for the replies by the way.

If you've a short commute, and the car only does small daily mileage, bring it for a good spin (more than 50kms)

Dont forget to use fuel cleaner or a couple of liters of petrol to a 3/4 tank of diesel.
