    Hi
I’m changing the diesel filter on my mk6 2.0l golf

Had a quick look on the net
    And there’s 2 conflicting methods

1 is swap it fill the canister up with fuel and start it

2 is change it get into
The cars diagnostics and run the fuel pump manually from the tank
    Running the system dry
Will burn the hi pressure pump out apparently

    Seems a lot of hassle

Yeah I changed fuel filter in my vw cc 2.0tdi 2013 by just filling up canister to the top had no problems starting it or even running. Even had vag com just couldn't be bothered setting it up.

Same method with the same car for me. Engine took maybe 0.5-1 second longer to start. Running perfectly since.

You'll see a lot of debate on it on other sites, probably due to a lot of fuel pump failures in the states. The issue doesn't seem to be as big over here, probably due to the bad American diesel.

I'd find it hard to believe the average Indy mechanic here pulls out a laptop with VCDS when changing a fuel filter during a routine service here.

I suppose it's more of a risk thing, if it doesn't start and you dont have a diag tool available then you will be cream crackered.

    Ive an 09 A4.
I believe George Dalton gave the advice here at one stage to turn on the ignition numerous times which turns on the fuel pump for a few seconds each time .
    Eventually it fills the filter.
Done it myself on the A4 and a few others with no problems. Instant start
