I'm planning on putting in a few groves/shelter belts.
Any recommendations on variety & spacing of trees?
    Thanks

I researched this subject a few years ago. Try Googling it and reading the North American literature. There's a bit of science to it. For instance, in the prairie regions they use shelter belts to drop the snow before it reaches the sheds. Tree species will be different but the principles will remain the same.

I'd hold on as there could be a grant for it under the new CAP.

I was thinking there should be but my glas advisor didn't think so, is this far down the line?

Give a Google on shelter belts in New Zealand as well.
They've had a fair bit of experience of it at this stage.

A lot of New Zealand flax here, great for shelter and because little else would grow.
