Hi I have a 2012 5 series (150k miles) it has an audible rattle heard when the car is in drive and the brake pedal is pressed also at low speeds on acceleration also when you if u go through a sudden dip in the road the vibration is experienced and when the car is stopped on an upward incline without the gears engaged e.g in park.

So when the bonnet is raised and I put the car in drive i cab see the engine is rapidly vibrating. but its not when I take it out of drive. So I brought it to a mechanic and I said especially I wanted him to check the engine mounts. He said the engine mounts are good. He said he could not find the source he said he called a pal in main bmw dealership also and he had no further ideas.

That was 10 months ago I have done 10k miles since the problem is no worse. But its annoying. Any thoughts what it could be?

The vibration when the car is in drive is probably normal enough as a gear is engaged and the car wants to move but the parking brake is preventing it also engine mounts when worn don't cause low level rattles.

If you can get the car on a 4 post lift and get underneath it and whack the tyres with a mallet/hammer, you might be able to locate the rattle but then again you might not. Rattles can sometimes be notoriously difficult to locate.

I had a rattle somewhere low down on the front drivers side just before Christmas. It basically started one day and was quite noticeable especially at low speeds on rough broken surfaces. I replaced the lower balljoint, upper arm bush, roll bar bushes and roll bar links but the rattle remained. Myself and a mate pulled/poked and prodded absolutely every moving part yet couldn't locate the rattle or replicate it with the car on a lift. So I just said 'f**k it and ignored it until about 2 weeks ago when I noticed the rattle had stopped and I couldn't get it to rattle in the usual places I noticed it. Anyway I was completely puzzled but delighted. I was telling my wife about it and she said that she picked up something (she described it as maybe a brake disc) from the driveway earlier the previous week and threw it in behind the garage so I went to take a look at what it was. It was a brake disc dust plate and surprise surprise the front drivers side dust plate of my car was missing and so it was was obviously the source of my rattle that had disappeared.
