What to do with old motor

    Hi folks,

I'm looking ahead on this one and trying to figure out best route (if any).

Currently driving a 07 (EDIT: NOT A 08) Passat. Honestly I've never had too much of an issue driving it. Love the car, body and interior in great nick, very comfortable to drive.

However, over the last 3 years it has had some work done and the service costs are starting to add up. I've made a decision to run it for another year once I get the NCT and this time next year hoping to upgrade.

I'm pretty sure there's very little chance of the car been taken as a trade in?

What options do I have then? Sell privately or just straight too a scrap yard?
I know no-one in the market wants a 08 tbh, I'm just curious as to any options there might be.
    Any info appreciated!

Still plenty of people looking for 08s. Especially diesel.
A dealer will gladly take it as a trade in, but the actual value will be minimal. You will certainly get more by just selling it.

If it's running with a new NCT it will sell.
Better again if it's low tax.

Would minimal be less than 500 do you think?

Depends on if it’s petrol or diesel, but even so, once it has a valid NCT you’d clear €750.

€190 every 3 months on the tax.
If I put it through the NCT early and it doesn't require a lot of work I'd prob try squeeze another year out of it tbh. Doubt I'd invest to repair for sale.

How did that end up on the old "expensive" tax system?

You’d sell an 08 Passat easy, the Polish love them. I think an 08 with NCT and chaep tax will always have some sort of value, especially a nice highline. The 07’s on the other hand are worth feck all nowadays. Had one for a while there a great car

    Ignore me, it's 07, not a 08!

Oh I see.. Yeah 07 is a different ball game value wise unfortunately, I wouldn’t be scrapping it tho, there will always be someone willing to buy

If you can get over €2,000 sell it. If not, would you consider trading it in for a new car?

I'd say you'd get more selling it. Is there a fresh NCT on it?
