    Mrs Mothoin needs a car,

needs a run around, and has settled on either a Renault Megane or Opel Astra hatchback

2010-2011 seems to be our budget range

    which would be the superior?

The Megane is the superior car but she should try both out and pick the one she likes best.

    Peace and long life.

    Megane by a mile.

The Mk 3 Mégane (which is that age Megane) is significantly better then the Mk 2 Mégane for reliability

Worth noting because you might get people telling you don't touch a Megane because of what the previous Megane was like.

Renault went through a dire spell for reliability in the 01 to 07 era.

They improved their game massively around 2008.

GM/Opel stuff is just meh so Mégane it is from those two.

Not just that, but that era Megane was alsosignificantly better than rivals like the Ford Focus and VW Golf in terms of reliability.

From my own experience, that generation Renault, once serviced on schedule gave no significant issues, no clue on the Opel, our 11 reg Fluence is still flying it.

I own a 2010 megane bought in 2012 with 30,000 on the clock. I now have 204,000 still running sweet.

Serviced every 25,000, often average 4.6/4.7L per 100km in summer months. Motorway more 5.5 - 5.7L per 100km. No intention of trading anytime soon.

personally I am a renault fan, have a 161 master horsebox, which has 230,000 and hasnt missed a beat apart from a map sensor

hopefully will get the same value out of the car!
