so my 02 punto is finally going to its resting place. I have not driven it in a long time and held onto it due to him buying it new. when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and dementia I said I would hold onto as he brought it and was the last car he got.

It was a great car to drive, never any trouble with it

You can get a minty fresh Punto for pittance, so one that needs work has no value beyond whatever tax and test is left.

I agree, painted the bumper on my silver 02 Almera three years ago with paint and primer from dealz, it's stood the test of time. Cheap spray paint is an amazing yoke.

And you will without a shadow of a doubt make everything a lot worse.
Rust or damage is honest. A sh1t repair is just many times worse

If you don't repair the rust it will keep rusting. A quick scrub and a dollop of hammerite is still a lot better than doing nothing

there's also the NCT to consider. Cars in limbo like this will never last long enough to reach NCT free status, or even cheap tax.

Despite all the modern day anti-corrosion no car will realistically last 30 years left sitting outside in the sh1t Irish weather. Have to store inside and in a place without dampness to be in with a fighting chance of seeing the fabled chape tax

If you have a barn to hide it in until it approaches the 30 years mark it wouldn't be a bad plan. Eventually you'll get some big earner on the Dublin tech scene who wants to buy one because he had his first shag on the back seat of one and he won't mind spending an extra few k on it

Storing inside unless in dry controlled conditions can sometimes make them rot faster compared to a daily driven car stored outside where air is constantly circulating around it. In our climate they can also rot faster in the summer months, damp plus heat speeds things up.

You can really mitigate a lot of our crappy damp weather by extra rust protection. Pump all the vulnerable areas like inside doors, bonnet, boot etc with anti rust wax, waxoyl and the like. Particularly box sections like sills which in general rust much more quickly than other areas and you won't see it until it's game over or bloody expensive to fix. Underseal can help, but I personally never liked it. If rust gets a hold under it you can have rot slowly eat away with it still looking OK at a glance. IMH underseal type wax is the better bet, though needs an annual top up.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Spray schulz on the underbody about 12 years ago and still there giving it protection.
