Does anybody know the origins of saying, don't act the Dan Clarke? I've been saying this to me kids for years, and everybody where I grew up said it, but I've never actually thought, Who the F*ck is Dan Clarke? I always thought it was A Dublin thing

Never heard it before. Could be a rhyming slang for "act the lark", maybe?

Been living in Dublin since '89 and I've never heard anyone use that line. Maybe it's cockney rhyming slang for something?

That's a new one on me. Maybe you just made it up. What does it even mean?

We had a kid in our “area” who made stuff up all the time. Really crazy, far fetched, stuff.

Whenever some was suspected of lying or making something up they’d be told that was <insert the kid’s name> and to shut up.

“Waffle” and “bollocks” eventually took over but it’s still used by friends of mine and, even, their little brothers. I’m fairly confident the little brothers don’t know where it came from.
