Golf service - VW garage

I have a 181 Golf which is due a service..... I have it 14 months and yet to service it.

Should I go to a VW garage or does it matter?

Also, have seen the offer of a service for 169 from a VW garage but does anyone know if the final bill is in and around that or substantially more?!

    Thanks

Go with the 169 service and let them advise of any required works and don't give them the go ahead - tell them you will decide later on it. That way you will have a legit record of a vw service etc but you can go elsewhere for stuff like discs and pads if needed as main dealer tends to be nuts with those kind of things as well as being a little on the conservative side re wear.

Not sure where you are based OP but Seamus Mulligan in Portobello looked after my Golf for years. Sound man and an honest operator. He's a specialist in VAG and other German marques.

Did you buy it as a used car? 14 months doesn't tie in with 181.

A 181 is due its second service IMO. Second service I think is €189, it's just the 169 service with a pollen filter added.

I wouldnt expect many extras at 2 years of age on a Golf if you are at 30k or so kms. But obviously brakes, tyres etc sill be driver and usage dependent.

VW menu pricing for brakes, wipers etc is actually not too unreasonable for what it is.

This should be the cars second service, it will be oil/filter for €169 and a pollen filter for €59. You could get a Mann carbon filter online for €25 and fit it yourself, it's a 5 minute job. If you need wipers it's €32 for the front and €12 for the rear which is in line with the likes of Mick's Garage, I didn't even bother shopping around for those.

Can't comment on brake pads but VW seem to be decent with their prices. If you're going somewhere else make sure to compare prices of OEM parts, you get what you pay for.

Recommend service interval is 15k km or 12 months for petrols. 181 car should have its second service done until July. My second service was €209 after haggling. Basically each car dealer sets its own prices. Not much choice in cork.

I bought it the beginning of Dec 18 so it was a few months old with 7k kms and was serviced before I took it home but presume that could have been a minimal service......

I'm not sure if every VW garage does this but I get a video going through the underside of the car on a lift. They show each tyre thread depth with a digital gauge, brake pads/discs, suspension, exhaust and any other wear and tear associated with the bottom of the car so it would be difficult for them to upsell you parts you don't need.

I got an advisory for front wipers on my second service, when I asked about buying them he even asked "are you sure? It's just an advisory, you don't have to replace them right now" but I was happy to as they were leaving a small smudge directly in my line of sight.

I haven't had the smoothest experience with them, particularly when they wouldn't admit anything was wrong when my petrol sounded like a rattly diesel which turned out needing a replacement turbo, but apart from that, service wise and prices I can't really fault them.

Why would anyone want to watch a video of the arse end undercarriage of their car?

People like it. It adds an element of transparency and feeds into the premium experience you want from a main dealer.

They are generally very well received.

If VW do the service you get some sort of breakdown support that includes a loaner car in the event of your car being o/s. I'm sure others on the forum will know the ins and outs of it.
