Im interested in getting a modern classic. I was initially looking for a 99/00 Audi TT but they seem difficult to find. Iv now started looking at 98-00 Mercedes SLKs. Anyone have any experience with both? Which would you recommend? Any other car suggestions would be great too!
    Thanks

Honda S2000? Probably more expensive to buy than the others though if your on a small budget. Mazda MX-5 could be a good and cheaper alternative.

Trying to sort something for a budget of around €3k. had been looking at the mx5 but Id prefer a hard top. I should clarify that Id be looking for a tt coupe and not roadster. Im considering the slk because its hardtop.

Please forgive my opinionated frankness, but both cars mentioned are ugly as sin and the TT MK1 is what created the car's image as an "hairdressers" car - they were notoriously horrendous in the handling department.

The options mentioned - S2000 and MX5 are literally lightyears ahead.

Or, if you really want a modern classic with a roof, one of these:

The only issue is that good examples of S2000, MX-5 and GTVs of that vintage are appreciating quite fast...you might find one for the budget, but it might cost you way way more in the long run.

Then don't look at a TT or SLK.

With your budget, buy a MX-5.

Opinions is exactly what Im seeking! I had driven a tt 225hp quattro and thought it was fine. I have an e92 325i as a daily and an e30 classic for reference, both being coupes. So im not looking for a sporty car thats the best handling on country roads, or the fasted, im looking for something that is fun and comfortable to reduce the mileage on my other two which is why I thought a quattro tt on a classic insurance policy would be good for driving during the wet winter months in particular.

My issues with the mx5 is that I cant get a quote. I tried Autoline but was told it would need to be parked in a garage or driveway. I have my e30 parked in a private laneway secured with an electric gate (insured with (FBD) but Autoline wont accept that so it seems that a Jap car is out of the question.

Id love an S2000 but as you mentioned, it is well outside my budget for a decent example!

I have a 225 Quattro TT as a daily driver. I definitely wouldn't agree with the above comments on it being bad handling.
I've had Evo's, Skylines, even a 106 GTI, and I don't rate the TT badly in comparison.
The MK1's are starting to look more and more classic, particularly if you can find an original example.
Mine is original and still going strong at over 300k km.
