I’m wondering what engine is better a 1.2l 115 hp
    Or a 1.6l 80hp in a VW Golf
I’m looking for the pros and cons of each,
If a 1.2l engine can produce 115 hp why would I choose a bigger engine with lower hp
    Thanks!

The 1.2 is turbocharged, the 1.6 isn't. Some people prefer normally aspirated engines to turbo engines.
What golf 1.6 is only producing 80 bhp?
    Is it an old one?

A non turbo engine with more than 100hp in that size of car. 80 hp will be slow and the turbo will take minding to avoid expensive repairs

Sorry it’s 85 bhp but still pretty low, I’ve seen it on newer golfs 161-181 1.6 Diesel engine

When you say “minding” what do you mean as in regular servicing or how much the car would be driven?

What you mean to say is that the car, like every other car, will have to be serviced properly to maintain it.

Naturally aspirated, turbo, supercharged etc etc they all take minding

85 is very low for a decent sized car like a golf. Best avoided and you can be sure it's a poor spec too, people don't spec up bargain basement engined cars in my opinion.
Needs 110+ in my opinion to not be a complete dog

    A 1.6 Golf engine wouldn’t be 80hp unless it’s from the 80s

I think the OP is mixed up, the 1.2 tsi petrol engine was available in 85bhp. The least powerful 1.6 diesel would be 90 or 95bhp depending on the year.

If you look on the Volkswagen website in the used section you’ll see plenty of new Golfs with 1.6l engines with 85hp.

Diesels? I’m assuming the 1.2 you’re talking about is petrol.

The bhp of the engine only tells part of the story (was sure the base engine in the 1.6 diesel golf was 90PS)
You have to factor in torque and the actual power band into it too, the 115 or 80 figures you’re quoting are only peak figures. They’re s good benchmark but don’t tell you the full story.

Unless your standards are above average, you’ll probably find any turbocharged petrol or diesel car perfectly adequate. Certainly base model cars are a lot nippier than they were 10-15 years ago.

1.2 tsi was replaced with 1.0tsi in 2017. I think 1.6 diesel came in ab 85hp in trendline spec and in the golf van in mk7

I'd still say a diesel in a modern car with only 80-90 bhp peak is going to be pretty gutless regardless, but that's not to say the 1.2 TSI will be massively better either without knowing more about both of them.

OP your specs seem off...I wouldn't be going with anything over 10-11 second 0-60 in a car of this era.

We have a 90PS Mk7 Golf here and while it’s not what you’d call fast, it’s still massively more capable than the likes of a 1.4 petrol Auris or equivalent non turbo car of that size which would have been quite common a few years ago.

There’s people that swear a 1.0 Octavia is a rocket.
