    Both of these cars are quite similarly priced (entry level spec) so I'm wondering why more Golfs are sold than A3s?

    Because Golfs are cheaper when new.

    There's about 6k between the cheapest golf and the cheapest audi a3.... 25k v 31k which is a decent chunk of change.
