Surely they have an algorithm to make sure that no song is repeated? As if having to make sure you don't repeat a song would be so difficult anyway... I mean aren't there enough songs out there or something?! Do they deliberately mess up on occasion just to make somebody's day and gain publicity.

And I presume that stations that do repeat songs repeat them deliberately.

It's a competition, and a way of getting people to listen to 4fm all day with a chance of winning a grand.

Like above its done for a reason, if nobody wins then less would listen, all stations are at some sort of give away.

Oh I didn't realise it was a competition. So they mess up on purpose?

Yes.... They want you to catch them so they want people to stay listening....

It's just funny that they say "if we mess up, we pay up". What they should really say is "can you spot the repeat song?"

    It's part of the appeal....

    They basically are saying that.

They can't give out deals like today FM or 98fm for example.

Radio studio playback software (What they play music on.) can be programmed easily to play songs once only within a specified time frame. It sounds like a long time but a typical station will play about 12-14 songs an hour. Spread over 12 hours and you are looking at about 160 songs in that time. Most people would tune in for smaller lengths of time over the day so it's unlikely that a lot of people would be in a position to hear a song repeated within 12 hours on a given station.

A very Classic and Traditional Marketing Strategy!

Just wondering, would "Classic Hits" formerly 4FM actually get more frequencies at some point? It would make sense to have not just a "commuter radio" but a nationwide radio as well.

Classic Hits, formerly 4FM, were given a multi-city license, not a nationwide license. As it happens, the license also officially covers Co. Clare! Unless there is a new competition for a nationwide license (which they could apply for then), they cannot just seek more frequencies to become nationwide.

I think they were called 4 FM, as they covered 4 cities, or for regions. Initially at least.

Interestingly, they also have a new frequency in Balbriggan. 2 or 3 years ago, this frequency wasn't in use for 4 FM.

I think it was 4FM without the space! Yes, it was four cities: Dublin, Galway, Cork and Limerick, and Co. Clare was also included, probably because it is slap bang between Limerick and Galway!

The frequency for Balbriggan might have been something to do with possible issues picking up Classic Hits in north Co. Dublin. I know that the main frequency in Dublin - 94.9 - is also one of the frequencies for Wicklow's East Coast FM. If you travel through north Wicklow, you can pick up Classic Hits on 94.9 and then, as you pass through Kilmacanogue and on towards Roundwood, you are suddenly listening to East Coast FM!

I am not certain, whether this frequency in Balbriggan, currently used by Classic Hits 4FM was used by 98 FM at some point? 98 FM had a frequency in Balbriggan once.

After 25 years of broadcasting it suddenly transpired that there where blackspots in Balbriggan for reception of FM104 , 98FM etc.....new TXS where switched on and just happened to be on frequencies that blocked reception of stations from NI.....

98FM where never on Amy other frequency before this - though of course they should have been on 105.5 and later 96.7 but that's another story.

Back to 4FM - if there was a national licence to be offered it's more likely that it's sister station Nova would apply for the licence.

The thing is, that I've never had any issues in picking up the Three Rock transmitter in Balbriggan or in this area.

Maybe some radios have issues, but certainly not mine....
