Leave phone unlocked.....

I know I could ask this on other phone specific forums, but it’s a farmers question and I’d rather get a farmers answer as opposed to some over my head techno blurb from a Bill Gates wannabe......
Basically, I have a Sony smartphone with fingerprint unlock. The fingerprint unlock works great most of the time, but when my finger is damp, greasy, or covered in some other farm related substance, it’s useless. Is it possible to turn off fingerprint unlock, and preferably have no screen lock at all? I know there are good reasons to have the phone locked, but I’d rather just be able to use the bloody thing when I want to.....

If you go into settings depending on your phone you should see a "lock screen" or equivalent where you can turn it off. Only thing is I would imagine you'll be calling everyone/ anyone in your pocket unknowingly and it could create more hassle?

With online banking linked now through phones I'd be thinking careful about it.

Yes, you can go to Settings and then Security to switch it off. You need to know the PIN or password from when you set it up.

You could also get a cheap watch so it will unlock when it's near it. Something like in the link.

Good point, and something I didn’t even consider!

Is it that your screen does not recognise your thumb print when wet or muddy?
If so, you could put a 4 digit code on it instead?
That's in the settings too, in the lick screen part.
Personally, I wouldn't not have some sort of lock. It would be a worry if you lost your phone.
Our phones are like personal diaries now.

Yes, even a damp thumb is enough to stop it working..... I might try setting up a 4digit code.....

Use your forefinger for the code.

User friendly screens in a farming situation,, may be a project for students of Product design.

The only phone that ever worked for me in this situation, was the old Nokia 3210, press button, with a screen cover.

I have the Calculator and light on the unlocked side of the screen . Is it possible to have other apps on the unlocked side of the screen eg wats app and photos . I have I phone 6 and am moving to I phone 8 in the next few weeks .

I'd leave the screen lock on the phone for security reasons, personal info banking etc.

But there are ways to keep it unlocked while near trusted devices (like the wristband suggested above), or home wifi network or simply while in a geo-fenced area ie your farm. The screen will still lock to prevent pocket dialing, just won't prompt for finger print or pin number.

Thanks for the replies. Some useful suggestions there. But, when I go into settings to try and change something in Lock screen and security, it asks for my password and that’s as far as I can get. After a couple of attempts, it tells me settings keep stopping. I’ll just accept that the bloody thing hates me. I can foresee it bouncing off a wall at some point in the future though...........

Is taking it into the 3 or vodafone shop an option to get help changing the lock?

Try 0000. Sometimes that's the default code.

I have a password, that I set when I got the phone first. It occasionally asks me for it when I try to unlock the phone with my fingerprint, and it works fine then. But it won't unlock the phone when my fingerprint isn't recognised, nor it wouldn't allow me into the phone lock settings.

I'll give 0000 a go anyway, just to see...............

No, I didn't do anything with it since. I think that link is to unlock the phone to use any sim...I just want to unlock the phone so that I don't need fingerprint id, or a code to use the phone. I'm fine with it most of the time, It's just when my hands are damp or dirty that it drives me mad.....

Banking apps require you to input a pin code/fingerprint recognition so this is not an issue.

Some of them also enforce a lock screen on the device, especially if using contactless payments.

A stylus is a pen shaped instrument with a round rubber piece that moves effortlessly across touchscreen devices. It is an instrument used to navigate on a phone or tablet. A stylus is used by placing it on the touchscreen surface. Some styluses include a pen incorporating 2 writing instruments into 1 tool.

think this link is worth a read.

That's in the settings too, in the lick screen part.
Certainly would be a solution. But I don’t think the technology exists.

    :pac:

No, my phone hasn't facial recognition. I'd chance leaving it unlocked, but for some reason it won't let me into the setting for the lock screen.
