I have an existing driveway. Looking to widen the entrance (knocking a bit of the wall, and moving the pillar). Not looking to widen the dishing. Does this need planning permission?

you are allowed to extend an existing driveway to the front or side of the house for parking of up to two cars without the need for planning permission, provided that it is incidental to the use of the house and are not extending the dishing

Not something that should be decided on a poll on an internet forum.
Having said that 2 of the 3 advising that you need planning
are mods and have a lot of respect and experience on here.

    Planning required.
Any alteration to a vehicular entrance requires planning.

*not sure where the poster up there is getting their info that it’s exempt. Maybe they can share.

I can only assume they are referring to the driveway itself, with the boundary/garden, as opposed to altering/extending/widening the vehicular entrance?

100% Planning Application required to extend any driveway entrance to a house

As far as I'm aware, this refers to the construction of the actual paved area of the driveway as opposed to the vehicular entrance, which you need planning if you want to widen.

Max width of 3.5m. Going through the process currently.

If I didnt need the dropped kerb afterwards i would have cracked on without it tbh

Depends on the council. Dublin is 3.6m.

It’s also limited to 50% of the surface area to the front of the building line.

    That’s incorrect.
    Check their development plan.

I’ve gotten permission for more than 10 in the last 12 months ;)

Just to back up my claim, this is the document that planners use to determine planning applications for vehicular entrances.
Where driveways are provided, they shall be at least 2.5 m or, at most, 3.6 m in width, and shall not have outward opening gates.

Section 5 deals with roads standards.

Looking at doing something similar...how are you planning on moving the gate pier/pillar?

Mine is all concrete so I guess I could demo and then rebuild in the correct location, would leave me with a lot of concrete and would require shuttering and rebar I guess. (its about 1.5M tall and .5m across)

    /edit
Actually I dont think mine is solid concrete, I remove the gates and gate hangers and the middle of the pillar was odds and ends of stone, though it seems like the outside is more than just render.
