Hi,

Purchased a Dolan frame with nothing other than handlebars (no stem), seatpost and saddle!

Looking to build it up and got a quote for Shimano 105 groupset, Shimano wheelset and other components which came close to €1k but would I be better off buying other components here ie: wheelset (better spec) to bring the cost down?

Newbie so not really sure what is compatible with what! Planning to use the bike for commuting and also plan to get into some weekend spins. Any advice appreciated.

Depending on what you want to do, it will likely never be worth your while financially building up a Dolan frame and costing 1000€. At that price point you'd get 105 with hydraulic discs in a sale (with a bit of searching).

If you look around you can find parts much cheaper here but realistically I'd only do the build if you want to learn or customise in a particular way, not as a way of saving money

its fun building up your own bike, enjoy the process. You can either get full price components or bargain hunt. Either sales or 2nd hand.

I built up a dolan frame with all the components off an old bike, You could seek out unused kit and buy a few bits new. Get a tool kit online and take your time building it up.

I build up bikes all the time and love having several things on the go at once. As above it's not really a cost saving exercise as second hand bike prices can be very low. In saying that I usually grab all the bits and pieces from the clearance pages (bar tape,saddles,stems,handlebars)

If you've the frame,bars,seat post all I'd buy new would be a jag wire gear and brake cable kit (cheaper alternatives) and bar tape

You could throw on the following though; €743 (you could probably knock a few hundred off with spec/patience)

I'd recommend going after decent quality 5800 second hand parts. There's no reason why you couldn't finish off that bike to a good finish for €500.
I find Facebook marketplace good, and some of the UK Facebook pages (Yorkshire Cycling Sales) in particular. Handy to have a Parcel Motel account.

As mentioned, you could find a bargain that someone got on the bike to work scheme and left in their shed and just transfer all the parts onto your frame. Certainly could be the cheapest way of doing it as there are a lot about on donedeal and adverts.

If I am going with Shimano 105 groupset what am I looking for in terms of wheelset? Will any wheelset fit or am I looking for a particular size? 10/11 speed? Does it matter? Clincher/tubular? I am really new to all this stuff.

The wheel choice depends on the speed of the groupset; so either 10 or 11speed. In my experience, with Shimano/SRAM wheels, 11 speed wheels generally come with a spacer to work on 10speed, whereas 10speed wheel won’t work as commonly on an otherwise 11 speed setup, although there is an ultegra cassette than will work with 11speed drivetrain on a 10 speed wheel.

105-5800 series is what others suggest and it’s a good one to go for, it’s 11speed and readily available second hand.

As for options on the wheels, they’ll always be 700c size for rim brake. As far as clinchers vs tubulars go that’s a long debate! Personally I would go with clinchers as i would consider them easier to repair on the side of the road if needed, and clincher tires generally are cheaper than tubulars. This comes at the cost of a bit of extra weight generally.

What Dolan frame is it? I built up a Dolan Hercules SE a while back. Bought it off another boardsie for €200 and fitted secondhand 105 and a set of hand-built wheels. Great bike, really comfortable and strong. I did a long 850km Mizen to Malin on it too.
As others have said, if its one of the lower end framesets it might be easier and way cheaper to buy a secondhand bike.
Or keep the frame and build it up as a winter bike with cheaper components

You will need a pair of long drop brake calipers for the Professio frameset, the 47mm 105 are too short.
