Query re dashboard icon

I was going into a corner very very slowly in a high gear. I knew it was too high and was just going to go down to first when engine cut out. I simply switched on engine again and continued on. No big deal. In previous cars i just turn switch on again and off I go.

But i never had a car with icons on dash before so the engine icon is being displayed.
Its on I assume because engine cut out. But everything is fine. But the icon is still there on the dash and it annoys me. I want to get rid of it. But how?

Bring it to a garage and have it checked out.

They generally only illumate for a reason.

Thanks. Yes i suppose i should.
I was slowing down taking a corner in too high a gear and i thought i would kind of get away with it as i was going to speed up once corner was taken. But no.
I had last car for ten years and i am sure i did the same thing over the years. Too high a gear at too slow a speed and if it had icons it would have shown the engine icon too. It didn't seem to do any damage to engine. As i said, i drove it for a good ten years. It wasn't a regular occurrence at all. Once in a blue moon kind of thing.

But in general the icons signal an issue and won't disappear until a garage looks at it?

Technically what caused the cut out?

What symbol is on the dash?

I think the op is referring to the EML . Engine Management Light.

We had a 2001 Toyota Corolla and in circumstances such as you describe, engine lugging down in too high a gear, the engine light would come on. There wasn’t a problem as such, it was a momentary fault that put on the light. Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery put the light out.

It’s strange that that would cause it to stay on.

All cars have icons on the dashboard?!

You should practice being in the right gear at all times. It should be completely natural considering you are driving 10 plus years.

You're never supposed to go down to first. Second is the slowest gear you can drive in. You'd get a mark against you if you did that in a driving test and that can damage the engine. 1st is designed for moving off from a stop until you've enough momentum to use 2nd. My gearbox automatically locks 1st while moving, even doing 5km/h you physically can't push the gear stick into 1st you have to reach 0km/h before switching into 1st.

An engine light like that can be nothing or it can be major. A broken seal in the engine from combustion happening at the wrong time due to the pistons moving slower than designed could require a whole new engine if it's driven on too long. A mechanic I use in the main dealer would say to tow the car to the garage if the engine light is on if the car is worth anything decent.

Yes. I don't know anything about cars at all. But as i said before it's not an uncommon thing to happen. I can imagine it has happened to others as well. It takes about three or four seconds for the cut out and to switch on again and to continue on driving. But i never brought it to garage as i knew the cause (high gear, low speed) and it was sorted immediately. I wouldn't know how to disconnect battery or anything at all like that.

Its just having that icon on that is annoying me.

Yes, once it registers a fault, the light stays on. I borrowed a scanner and plugged it in while the light was on and it said “misfire on cylinder 3” So basically the engine misfired momentarily while the revs were too low, causing the light to come. The light stays on until you clear the fault using a plug in scanner or disconnecting the battery which I did when I didn’t have a scanner. (I googled how to clear fault light Toyota Corolla).
Eventually the engine developed a permanent misfire which was cured by replacing a faulty coil pack on cylinder 3. So the coil pack was failing for some time before finally throwing in the towel.

Is your car unleaded? If so you can get a cheap bluetooth obd2 reader from amazon and a free app called torque lite for your phone to read the fault code. Ive been using this for years and it has been a life saver - you can usually find the problem instantly and decide wether to drive on for a while / take to a mechanic or try and fix yourself.

    This reminds me ,
I have a strange light on my dash the last year or so.
    Ever since the NCT.
    It's an orange jelly fish.
    Any ideas ?

You can get a check engine light when you stall a car where it won’t stay on.

Just urinate on the car. I think that helps with jellyfish

Yes i have passed a test and yes i have turned it on and off.

Has anyone ever had a similar situation as i described above and you know the cause ( engine stalling due to low speed high gear) and you rectiy it within seconds by simply turning on the ignition and driving on without any problems at all, did you bring it into the garage to be checked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,832 ✭✭✭greasepalm

No mentiojn of make or model; petrol or diesel.
Diagnostic need to be read as car should not cut out while driving.

I would advise getting the error code read by a mechanic. Until you get the code read you really are just guessing.

Yes stalling a car in gear could well throw this error up.

I've never heard or done what you are saying happened op.....

You say this happens! It shouldn't.

If the car is moving and you have been driving at higher then 1st then you wouldn't put it back in 1st unless starting off from a full stop.

If this isn't some kind of troll exercise,I would suggest investing some money in driving lessons.
If you think stalling a car going into a corner and then restarting it is an acceptable standard of control, then FYI it's not.

There's a turn on the Finglas test route where dropping to 1st from a slow 2nd is likely because it's so tight especially when a car arrives at it as you turn it. You won't get marked on it. Avoid if you can of course.

I'd be interested in what would happen in cars from the VAG group that lock 1st gear while moving. I also wonder, while not best practice, would using the clutch to control your speed in 2nd in that case be more appropraite.

If moving at all 2nd will do grand.
    If not 1st will work.

If you are going in reverse while doing a scandi flick then something has has gone terribly wrong.
