Cost of hospital stay in Ireland for non resident

My father in law was planning to come to Ireland for a visit. He is having some difficulties getting health insurance as he is 75 and had recently had to have some tests done on his heart. All of the tests came back negative, and his doctor said he's had no change in health.

He is unfortunately unable to get travel insurance since this happened so close to his trip -- even though results were negative. In the event that he did visit and had to be hospitalized, does anyone have an idea of the cost of a hospital stay? Testing? Surgery?

On the HSE website it states "If you are not ordinarily resident and you are not entitled to health care under any of the circumstances described above, the HSE may apply the full economic cost for any services provided." - which is not very informative.

    Anyone have any idea?

    Thanks in advance.

Edit - He is Canadian so not an EU citizen

What country is he from? If he is an EU citizen he could get an EHIC card and will be treated as if he were an Irish citizen on our public health system, he will need to apply for one in his home country.

This is the application process for Irish citizens.

He is Canadian so I guess this is not applicable. Thanks though.

Yep, we're in the Dublin region so the Mater would certainly be an option if it came to it. Looks like the prices quoted there are only for emergency visits, we will need to contact them to get an idea of the cost if he had to stay overnight etc.

    Thanks, this is really useful.

An overnight stay is usually in the region of 1000 Euro per night before any treatment. You pay extra for blood tests, scans etc
