Doorbell options

    Hi,

Recently changed out front door for composite one. The old door had a wired doorbell which worked perfectly. I have kept the bell cable in place until I make a decision. The Mrs wants the look of the Ring (video doorbell) but we don’t actually require the need to see who is at the door on our phone. The wireless door bells with chime look dated in my opinion. Also don’t want spending a fortune on this. I know other people who have gone through 4 or even 5 wireless bells - they fail over time. The electrician suggests we just use the wired bell and go with a new cover for it.

    What would people recommend?

    Thanks

I got a wireless doorbell in Lidl or Aldi a few weeks ago for 6eur
If it lasts a year I’ll be happy with it

    Cheap n cheerful

Do not get a wireless bell. They're crap went through 3. Batteries hogs.

Replace the button and keep your wired setup.

Just get a plan single push button

Wired is always better. However if you want to go wireless I would recommend the ALDI one as Lex got. I had a Honeywell wireless one that gave endless trouble. Cost €55. Water ingress into the bell push and eating batteries. The €10 ALDI one is faultless.
I would advise against Ring as there well documented privacy issues. Do a quick search on the web.

Thanks all - that is what I was thinking and also what my electrician echoed however the Mrs came home with a Ring doorbell today! I’ll tell her about these privacy issues and say they will fail within 2-3 years!

You may need to change the transformer being used (video doorbells usually require 12-24V and Irish doorbells are typically only 6V), also a chime that is compatible with higher voltage (Honeywell do a few that go from 8-16V).

    Hi Folks
Going to resurrect this and hope someone can help. We had one of the old wired bells and had some work done. The electrician lost the cover off the bell (the bit that screws on over the bell). Any idea where I would get a cover for it or even what to search for? I have tried wireless ones but really want to go back to the old fashioned one that worked! TIA

I believe Woodies, an electrical supplier or Screwfix.ie sell them

For myself in the end I went with Ring doorbell connected to my wired doorbell. If it packs in I’ll go back to regular push button bell.
