520d battery

I think the battery on my 2012 520d is on its way out.
I've noticed that the start/stop doesn't work anymore (I usually have it disabled anyway)

My question is.. can I attach a trickle charger under the bonnet via the jump start points, or will I have to attach it directly to the battery ?

(I'm thinking directly to the battery)

Why would you want to trickle charge it? Don't you drive enough to keep it charged?
    How old is the battery?

In short, if the battery is really on its last legs you need a new one. Trickle charging won't help.

    AFAIK it's the original battery.
    I haven't noticed any I'll effects.
I do plenty of mileage, but I do run the heated seats a lot of the time, and I'm partial to running the climate system prior to my return to the car. (Which would be harsh on the battery)

If it's the original then it's 8 years or so, that is a long time for a battery (usually 4/5/6 years is what they can do).
Also, clod weather will wear it too.

Just replace it, it doesn't owe you anything.

Cars cost money to run, fact.

BTW, you will have to get the new battery coded too otherwise it won't last pi$$ing time.

BMW have an system called IBS, Intelligent Battery Service.
You have to get the car coded to let this system know a new battery has been installed.

****... I was considering changing the battery on my e60 520d... would I be apply to that model?

Just replaced the original battery on my 2011 525d - guts of €300 including the coding. Battery in the F11s are massive due to the air suspension.

The car will start turning off unnecessary lights etc and logging these as errors if you get the car scanned.

Yes, any model with the iDrive system will have IBS.

Yeah.. I know that, that's why I'll probably just go to a main dealer to get a new battery.. I generally avoid them like the Corona virus.

I have some of those "intelligent" battery chargers, I think the manufacturer refers to it as a battery conditioner.

I'll give that a go first, I'll end up getting a new battery at some stage.

The car isn't showing any I'll effects as of yet. Other than not activating the stop/start, something that I always turn off at every startup anyway.

I can confirm all models from around the 520d e60 model up need the batterys coded to the car. Doesnt have to be main dealer tho we do plenty of them.
