Vw Golf clutch or gearbox?

I have a 2004 vw golf tdi - when i try to change gears its hard to get it into gear. This happened two weeks ago and i was sure i needed a new clutch but the next morning it worked perfectly and has been working fine until same thing happening today - is it the clutch or something else? I have a 2004 vw golf tdi - when i try to change gears its hard to get it into gear. The slave cylinder is basically the part the pushes the release bearing it could be leaking and losing pressure. Do u know much about cars if not just take it to a mechanic. Simple job really only takes about 3 hours on that to change the clutch and isn't that expensive.
