    Hi All,

Bought a car last week from a dealer. Advertised Mileage (online, in brochure AND on NCT) was all wrong (all different).
I asked Dealer to confirm the mileage and he told me the number on the brochure. (72k Miles)
Did the deal, took car home, next day hubbie discovers it has 84k Miles on the clock)

Talked to dealer. No apology. He said "what do you want".

I only use car for school runs etc so this is approx 2.5 years less miles i'm going to get out of my car.

Some Q's for you guys if possible:

    1. Any one had similar experience
    2. what is 10k extra miles on a car worth in terms of a discount? (I was thinking of asking for 1k back as refund - it was a ford galaxy worth EUR16k)
3 Is above to kind/harsh? (the 1,000 EUR i mean)
    4. What would you do?
    5. can i roll back the sale and tell him i want my trade in back and he can take his galaxy back?

any other advice? Garage is not SIMI.

Don't mean to be rude - but do you not have your own pair of functioning eyes?

Who collected the car from the dealer and did they not check the milage etc before signing on the dotted line?

Dealers get it wrong all the time. Sometimes on purpose, but probably mostly by pure negligence because they have so many cars and people keep using miles instead of kilometres.

Do try to get a year extra warranty out of the dealer or something but tbh it's not a major issue, the car should be just as fine at 84k as at 75k

What was on the NCT cert?

Hi Champ it was listed as approx 70k Miles instead of the 83k Miles. (dont have cert with me)

dealer probably saw NCT cert and added a percentage - rather than actually checking..

How can it be 'wrong' on the NCT cert - do you mean the NCT mileage was different to the other two? Surely the 70K on the NCT cert was correct when the NCT was done but that another 10K plus has been done since NCT?

Really? you'd be ok to take a car with an additional 10500 miles on it compared with what you were sold?
Pricing online and talking to other dealers they say the price difference between a 73k Miles car and an 84k miles car could be min of EUR1000...especially when its a Galaxy and i will only drive about 5,000 miles a year.

How was the car collected. Delivered or something?

    You check when last serviced?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭dubrov

It depends on the car's age and value but 1300miles is probably only worth in the low hundreds.

Ultimately, if you are not happy with the price, can you not return it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,049 ✭✭✭Ikozma

I wouldn't be happy, I'd be looking to get my money back tbh, seems very sneeky

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,557 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Just ask for €750 quid back

If I were to drive the car, it would only be six months worth of driving. A colleague of mine does that in three months. I understand your frustration but your own milage is somewhat irrelevant.

Milage is an indicator of condition, yes, but at the end of the day is just a number. You were happy with the condition of the car and didn't even notice it. No mechanic could tell whether an individual car had 70k or 80k miles on condition alone, there's just too much variance car to car.

I would take 10k motorway miles over 1k of city traffic/ramps every day of the week.

However, don't lose the plot, and look for a compromise here. Dealers are people too, who make mistakes. Extending the warranty protects you, and doesn't cost the dealer anything unless something does go wrong. They may be happy to do that to keep a happy customer.

Its 10500. Over 10 thousand miles more.

    Sorry meant 13000 miles.

You should definitely look for a discount and threaten to return if they don't.
If they refuse then return it if you are not happy with the price on the grounds that the product is not what what agreed..

I would doubt that it's miles - this is a country where odometers measure kilometres

10500 kms is about 6500 miles

the NCT cert definitely records kilometers

No the NCT was done the day i bought it.
Dealer said the NCT man typed it wrong on the cert.

This is starting to sound sketchy.
    I wouldn’t trust this dealer.

I personally wouldn't care too much. I might have given them a ring looking for something.....or cash in region of 500+.Legally the product was sold with a misleading description so you are open to exchange/money back or new deal(the 500+). Or small claims.
    If you have eivdence.
    Have another chat with seller.🙂

    miles or kms?

the NCT cert will show kms

    the odometer will show kms

I used to buy and sell cars and no matter how much I looked at a car I'd always forget to look at at least one thing. If I was preoccupied/rushed/google eyed, I might not look at alot of things😊

Did you do a history check to verify the mileage in UK before it was presented to NCT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,557 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

and the NCT cert shows miles?

try them for a few free services or something like that as none like actually giving cash back

That difference of 10k between the NCT and getting the car the next day is very suss. Could something like this be happening?

Not if it’s a UK import.

    Hi All,

Yes i have requested thread be deleted as I cannot do it myself. I have deleted my posts too; I have taken legal advise as this is a significant matter.
I'm aware this is a Car Selling forum so conscious the car dealer who sold to me could be on here giving me bad advice.
For those who replied and said they would just accept it/it wouldn't bother them too much, i find this very hard to believe.

10,000 extra miles and a car misrepresented all over the place is against the Sale of Goods act and is Misleading advertising from the Consumer Protection act 2007.

Thank you to those genuine replies who gave advice and knowledge.

    Legal advice?? Ah here

Edited to say, I'm not a dealer... And yeah I might be miffed with 10K extra miles maybe... But my car has over 200K miles and running fine, so, you're getting a tad over excited

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators Posts: 17,852 Mod ✭✭✭✭Henry Ford III

10k extra miles isn't overly significant. If you take a legal route you'll be unlikely profit as much as the solicitor.

If the car looks like it has been clocked then you've no idea what actual mileage is on the car and what has or hasn't been properly maintained on it.

I accompanied a neighbour to his car's first NCT a couple of weeks ago. He drives a 161 Skoda Yeti. Bought new in Ireland and the speedo is of course in KMs.

I had a look at the NCT cert afterwards and was surprised to see it read 34,xxx mls. Because of the warning on the cert that discrepancies must be notified to the NCT center before leaving we checked the oddo and sure enough it was reading 34,xxx ml

He doesn't remember ever setting it to read mls and never noticed it either.

I brought my car (E60 BMW) to the NCT last month and when leaving I noticed my cert had the details in miles.
Thought about it for a minute and then realised that it was the spare key which I had given them obviously had the setting in miles.
Glad I didn't storm back in giving out!

The NCT cert will show miles or kilometers depending on what the car shows. The tester simply chooses miles or kms when entering the information
