Cost of tiling/laying laminate

    Hi
I got a quote of 18 per square yard for laying a good quality laminate flooring and 25 per square yard for tiling. Is that expensive? No idea of pricing and don't want to be ripped off! Will be buying tiles and flooring from the same shop so will get a 10% discount on total price which will bring price down. They are a local company so will complete the job within a short timeframe so will not have to wait months for a separate labourer.

    Any advice greatly appreciated

Having done both myself I'm not sure of going rates but 25 per square yard for tiling sounds very reasonable. Even with you providing the adhesive and grout it takes a good deal of time and patience hence the cost. Is it both wall and floor tiling that's involved and what are the tiles and area like in terms of shape(s) and surface area. I've heard of quotes of up to 100 per square meter for tiling awkward jobs such as hexagon and herringbone on difficult surface areas.

Laying laminate is very simple and quite quick so if you're anyway handy it's something you can do yourself. All you really need is a good handsaw.

Thanks very much for the response! I had tried to Google prices and they seemed much lower online but a lot of people in the neighborhood seem to have used this local gang to do it. So hopefully they are as good as they seem and are reasonably priced. It would be wall and floor tiles in two bathrooms so the spaces could be difficult enough so the price is probably ok. I couldn't even hang a shelf so laminate might be way out of my league but thank you for the suggestion!

If you can try and see some of the local tiling jobs done or at least talk to the owners for their feedback. Planning the layout is important so you don't have unexpected shim cuts (thread on the matter here recently). It's quite easy to mess up a tiling job and a bad tiling job can become very expensive very quick especially in a bathroom.
