Imported a car from UK with no registration/log book

Hi folks, I went to register the car today here in Dublin and pay VRT but all I have is a photocopy of the previous owner's log book which the NCT centre here isn't accepting it. Apparently they need the original.

The garage in Wales sent off the log book to their department of transport or whoever they normally send it to, and gave me a photocopy.

Has this ever happened anyone? How could I fix this?

there's a thread full of cases just like yours. You've a big problem especially if it's now marked as exported.

It has. You shouldn't have let them send it to Swansea.

You'll have to apply to the DVLA Swansea for the form.

Thanks - in your experience were they helpful or does this take a long long time?

you won't get it. They won't send the V5C to an Irish address. Search for the thread, trust me.

Damn so what should I do next? The lady behind the counter told me to ask the garage to re-register in my sister's name (who lives in London) and then get my sister to send me a new log book?

Edit - would they send it to my sister in London?

It didn't happen to me because I insisted that I get the form from the garage otherwise there would be no sale. The garage I was dealing with were not familiar with the export procedure so I had to provide them with a document from the DVLA outlining the export procedure. I got the V5c and they sent a letter with our the dealer and my signature to the DVLA saying it was exported.

That horse has bolted for you, but they're are several threads here with people that were in the same boat as you. Can take weeks/months to get it sorted with Swansea iirc.

yes that's good advice, but if it's marked "exported" you'll have to go through the procedure to re-register it in the UK and then go through the procedure to VRT it in Ireland when the new V5C reaches your sister.

Is the V5c another name for the log book? Does that mean I have to travel over to the UK and register it there in the same way as here? As in, pay their equivalent of VRT, and then bring it home and pay VRT here?

How will the garage re register it in my sister's name if they no longer have the log book?

    you're finding the problems already.

Either get the garage to reregister it to your sister or contact the DVLA and talk to them to see if they can post it back to the garage.

You will get it back, eventually, but you will have a hard time doing it.

And you may well rack up VRT late fines now waiting for it once it goes outside the 30 day period.

The UK dealer didn't follow the proper procedure according to their own DVLA regulations around selling a car for permanent export. Unfortunately many of them are ignorant of the proper procedure so it's really down to the Irish buyer to research the procedure and remind them of it when buying to avoid all this grief. I'd be making this point to the UK dealer in that they should be helping you from their end to get this fixed as quickly as possible as their mistake is going to cost you money.

Yes - this guy hadn't a clue. He also got me to pay 6 months UK road tax. He asked me if republic of Ireland pays tax to the same UK transport department as Wales or if we have a different setup. I'm hoping they haven't even sent the document to anyone yet and can forward it to me in the post. I just don't k ow how they can register it to my sister if they don't have the document. I'll phone them on Monday and see.

He was right about the motor tax. To be able to pay by card you have to tax the car for a minimum of 6 months. It can be taxed for 1 month but only by direct debit and you need a UK bank account for that. You can claim back some of the motor tax from the DVLA once the car is permanently exported.

The garage are telling me if I fill out a V62 form to get the new log book sent to my sister's address in London it should work. Would anyone have any thoughts on that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,795 ✭✭✭Isambard

try it...did they also say they'd pay the VRT penalty?

No chance of that unless I start legal proceedings against them I would think. But I was only speaking to their admin team so far. She recommended that initially, and then said to wait because her contact in the DVLA told her that they will send the new log book to my republic of ireland address because I included a post code eventhough it was marked as exported. I'm not sure I fully believe that.

And the DVLA have this to say -

We appreciate that you have taken the time to contact us in relation to this matter.

It may help if I explain that if a V5C registration certificate is received with an address from outside of the UK, as we will not be able to register the vehicle to that address, we will send the V5C to the address that is provided on the V5C.

If the dealer has written your address on the V5C, we will return the V5C to you, without you being updated as the registered keeper. You should receive the documents within 4 weeks.

If the V5C doesn't arrive, you will need to contact the Irish authorities for further assistance.

They may send it, but it will be interesting to see if it will deliver to Ireland. I might try the V62 form as well to my sisters address.

if it's marked as exported you are sunk there. You'll have to go through the import into the UK procedure using sisters address to get a new V5C.

Your best hope is that they will do as they say and send on the old V5C

Yeah - but they'll probably say I need an original log book to import it over there!
