Maybe you're furnished with a 3rd gen i3 PC with 500 gb hard disc and 4GB ramwith windows XP. But you know that a pc with at least 1GB hard disc and 7th gen i3 for the task in hand.
And your stuck with your gear. Can you cope? Looking for Work Place answers not AH.

Not me. If anything, my IT setup is overspecced (screens too large, PC is too powerful since I am doing most stuff on the network ;)).

I’ve been that soldier. Would sit across from my boss and literally twiddle my thumbs because the machine could not handle the data request I was making.

All you can do is make the request for an upgrade, and if it’s refused, then do the best you can do and don’t bust a bollocks to get tasks completed.

The way I see it, if a company is happy to have underperforming hardware/software, then they are happy to have underperforming staff. If you prefer something more challenging, find a new job.

Until relatively recently (maybe 2016) our machines were Pentium 2160's with 1GB ram. 2006 era mid-range spec. Painful. We don't exactly need uber crunch machines but day to day tasks were a pain, had to actually fight for an upgrade.

They were upgraded to state-of-the-art....drumroll...i3-4160's with 4GB ram. In fairness they're fine though. Problem, they probably expect the same lifespan out of them as the Pentium 2160's, so we'll likely still be struggling with the i3's in 2024.

If you are using chrome, chrome will eat RAM for breakfast.

I’m lucky enough I can buy my own when I feel I need to. Within reason of course.

Got an i7, not sure which model but no more than 2 years old. 16GB Ram and 512GB SSD so Arch runs like a dream on it. All that for SSH and a few browser tabs.
