Today is the closing date for expressions of interest to tender for a sub-licence package of matches for the UEFA EURO 2020 Finals.

In their request to receive an ITT they must include in their request details of the platform(s) on which they would be proposing to transmit sub-licensed matches.

    https://about.rte.ie/uefa-euro-2020-finals/
Raidió Teilifís Éireann (“RTÉ) is inviting expressions of interest for sub-licence of a package of matches from the UEFA EURO 2020 Finals for live audio-visual transmission within the Republic of Ireland.

Requests to receive the Invitation to Tender document (the “ITT”) should be addressed to Declan McBennett, Group Head of Sport, RTÉ by e-mail to: Declan.McBennett@rte.ie by no later than 5pm on 24th January 2020. The emails should be clearly referenced as “Expression of Interest” and marked “Private & Confidential”.

Note that persons who request the ITT must include in their request details of the audio-visual platform(s) on which they would be proposing to transmit sub-licensed matches in the Republic of Ireland and their control of or access to those audio-visual platform(s) and RTÉ reserves the right not to provide the ITT to persons who do not show to RTɒs satisfaction control of or access to such audio-visual platform(s) for this purpose.

In addition, no person shall be entitled to receive the ITT (or take part in the bidding process) without signing a non-disclosure agreement with RTÉ in a form acceptable to RTÉ.

RTÉ currently intend to issue the ITT to interested parties on Monday 27th January 2020 and any questions, queries or clarifications on the ITT should be submitted to RTÉ by email to: Declan.McBennett@rte.ie by no later than 5pm on Wednesday 29th January 2020. RTÉ reserves the right to circulate (while withholding the identity of the enquirer) to all interested parties who have received the ITT any answers or clarifications that RTÉ may elect to provide to any such questions, queries or clarifications.

RTÉ currently intend that the deadline for bids to be submitted to RTÉ in response to the ITT will be not later than 5pm on Friday 7th February 2020.

These dates are subject to change at the discretion of RTÉ.

Any proposed sub-licence will be subject to the approval of UEFA and also be subject to compliance by the sub-licensee with UEFA requirements which include without limitation certain broadcast, presentation, technical, and commercial obligations and restrictions.

RTÉ shall not be obliged to grant any sub licence.

This is no more than a request for an expression of interest and constitutes neither a contract nor an offer which is capable of acceptance by any person.

This web page and any correspondence from RTÉ pursuant to it does not contain any representation upon which any person is entitled to rely at any point in time in order to bring any claim, action or proceedings against the RTÉ (whether for misrepresentation or otherwise).

I wonder which companies could possibly take these sub-licences, TG4 are unlikely. So the competition is VMTV.

Guessing they'll be airing on VM ONE rather than RTÉ ONE. pointless

Why would they sub-licence? Is there a bunch of games on at the same time or awkward times or something?

The same as they did in 2016.

To recover some cash spent on purchasing the TV rights.

It's more to do with not having to pay staff to cover these games.

Generally the only games kicking off simultaneously are round 3 group stage games.

They did this twice before, once for UEFA Euro 2016 and on a previous occasion in the 2000s, on both occasions to TV3. For Euro 2016 they sold a package of 21 games mostly in the pool stage, last 16 and QFs and shared rights to the final, the sub licence explicitly excluded Republic of Ireland fixtures (of course we are not qualified yet for Euro 2020) although TV3 did get two England group games and one of Northern Ireland’s.

Was hoping VM would get some games as their anchors and pundits are streets ahead of RTE nowadays. Never thought I'd say that back in the 00's

Yeah but their picture quality is ****e, still only SD on Soarview and Sky.

That's a fair point. Their SD looks worse than other SD channels. I noticed a lot of people complaining about that during the six nations. But you can still watch the analysis on it and switch over to one of the HD channels for the match itself.

More ads than analysis on VMTV. I wonder what nonsense will be pushed relentlessly this year during the 6 Nations coverage. It was Ireland's Got Talent last year.

Can't blame them I suppose. With 24 teams now there's a few matches with little interest. Realistically how many Irish people will watch Denmark v Finland for example. We've seen enough of the Danes lately.

Soccer always gets a good audience regardless of who’s playing, and it’s something RTÉ2 need.
