Clutch wearing

Is it possible to wear out a clutch in a new car in less than 5000 km?

Two possibilities I think, driver fault and faulty car, but could a driver's technique be so bad to wear out a clutch that quick?

It's not my car so I don't want to give more details than that.

How is it worn out? Slipping? Juddering? Clutch pedal feels rough when putting foot on it? What kind of car and what kind of driving (town vs open road)?

Is the person very old or a new driver?

I know one of the lads on here had a A4 and it failed very low km.

It totally depends were they resting their foot on it while driving or revving out hard while slipping the clutch.

Wife would be reversing and still have the foot on the brake instead of using the clutch to control the speed.

Foot resting on pedal is my theory. Only thing I can think of other than being faulty in some way.

You'd wear out a new clutch in 500 meters never mind 5000kms.

You do see it quite often, it's hard to get your head around and it's always a struggle for all involved.

You'd hand over a new (new new or new to them) car to a customer only for it to be recovered back the same day or the following day with burnt out clutch and their trade in that they drove for the last 10 years is still sitting in the car park with a perfectly fine clutch.

that makes sense. I drove this car 100km the week before and noticed nothing wrong. Piecing the evidence together I think there was a 500m incident such as you describe! (from an uphill tee junction...driver noticed smoke and noise.)

I've seen hire car drivers with smoke pouring out of the clutch at the airport roundabout(ie about 1 km from the car hire depot).

One in at the minute with 52kms on it and the clutch is completely burnt out.He didnt even get out of the car rental yard.

The driver was apparently able to "drive stick"

    He wasnt!!

thanks fellers, I've a better idea now of what might have happened!

I've owned nearly 100 cars and been driving for nearly 50 years, never replaced a clutch!

Riding the clutch, it's a habit some people have.

I had never smelled a burning clutch until I was a passenger with my brother who only started driving a couple of years ago. I think some people are just better off with automatics...
