Ford galaxy - power suddenly cuts out and lose acceleration

I have a 12 reg ford galaxy, with the 161 bhp 2 litre TDCI engine.

When I accelerate through low gears it is fine. Once I am at about 100km/h or so when I accelerate to overtake or go up a hill or something it suddenly cuts all acceleration. It will maintain the speed it is at but it will no longer speed up, or if it does it accelerates extremely slowly, a few minutes to get from say 100km/h - 120km/h.

The traction control light comes on and tends to remain on.

I think it must be an electronic rather than a mechanical problem. On teh motorway I have started just accelerating very gradually to try and avoid the issue arising. But even if I have it in cruise control at 120km/h it can be triggered when the car is going uphill and the cruise control system feeds in fuel to maintain speed.

The engine seems to be working fine it has plenty of power in lower gears and accelerates rapidly, but once this happens it is suddenly driving through treacle.

I would be happy to live without cruise control if this would solve the problem. Does anyone know if the cruise control system can be easily switched off?

Has anyone else encountered this on a galaxy?

Best to get it properly diagnosed. The vehicle is cutting back because it recognizes a fault somewhere on the vehicle. It will most likely have stored this fault.

You need to start by getting error codes read, that with give some direction as to the issue. Need to fix the underlying problem not disable CC.

I meant to say I would be happy to live without traction control rather than Cruise control - I think it is the traction control that is causing the problem not the CC. I guess I will need to bring it to a Ford Garage, I am sure they will need to hook up a laptop with special software to it, what I was hoping to find out from this thread was whether traction control can be switched off, so that I would know that there is a likely solution to the problem.

OFC if it were CC I would also happily live without that, just want the car to be capable of accelerating again.

any good scanner can read the codes, i'd be guessing wheel speed sensor or throttle position issue at certain speed / possession
