    Hi all,

My dad currently has a Suzuki Grand Vitara that has failed the NCT on rust. He’s contemplating replacing it but unsure with what. He’s getting the rust looked at first for possible repair but having a look in the mean time as it’s quite old to lose money on.

    Criteria as follows:
    - Budget up to €7,000 (preferably less as he does very little miles of 3k per year)
    - Must be able to pull trailer with some livestock
    - Commercial would suit best and he likes a high seating position like the Vitara

    Thanks in advance.

Ford Kuga, Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorrento, Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi Outlander were all available as commercial with AWD. You just need to be aware of their max towing capacity.

The fact he has a commercial policy and does small mileage surely places him as a good candidate for a full size yoke.

    Landcruiser
    Hilux
    Isuzu D-Max

Would be the 3 most popular and reliable. The
D-Max being the easiest on diesel.

For the smaller factory commercial category
    Ford kuga
05 or 06 sante fé (last of the old shape with 2.0 engine)
04-06 commercial grand vitara based on the xl7
    Hyundai Tucson
    Nissan xtrail
Kia sorento 2.5 (great when working, expensive fix when things go wrong)

    Personally I'd avoid the early 2.2crdi sante fé's 2007-2009

Most of the other smaller 4x4 commercials for sale will be conversions so worth checking insurance on them before pulling the trigger.

Them old Santa Fe’s are only 114hp. They’re can barely pull themselves along. A later Tucson 6 speed would be much better as they’re 140bhp.
Most of the commercials are 4wd IIRC.

They're reliable old things though and some are plated for 2000kg most are 1800kg though.

Two or three animals in an 8x4 trailer is about all anyone can legally tow with the smaller 4x4s. An aul sante fé would manage that no brother.

It would be very similar to an old shape Grand Vitara I suppose

Thanks all for the replies and suggestions.

By means of an update, dad has now decided to get it repaired by a guy he knows that will do it a very cheap rate.
