Bought new car over two weeks ago, no registration received yet

I purchased a new car on 3rd January and assumed the registration documents would be issued to me in a week or so. Heard nothing for over two weeks so contacted DTTAS and was told that I needed to tax the car first using the code from the chassis number and then the registration cert would be posted to me.
Is this a recent change in policy? The garage had told me to wait and the documents would arrive by post before I could tax it.

    Nope from a local dealer

that's the procedure. you wont get the document until you tax it and you can do this using the last seven numbers of the VIN. I assume by "new" you do mean new

Same here actually. I totally forgot about it. I just emailed the dealer. Strange one

Yeah it’s new. The dealer didn’t tell me this was the process. It’s been a few years since I purchased a new vehicle so wasn’t familiar.

often a dealer will tax it on your behalf, maybe that's what he means.

With a brand new car or newly registered imported car the vehicle licensing cert won't be issued until the car is first taxed. Try using the last 6 digits of the car's VIN as the PIN on the motor tax website to tax it online or try the request a new PIN function to get a new PIN via email.

It's definitely not NEW, it was a requirement to tax the car in 2006 to get the VLC.

I was also told to wait for the registration to arrive before I could tax it. Strange
