    Hi,

What, in your experience, is an average amount of time per day to have an oil boiler on heating the rads? In winter.

I know it's dependant on the accommodation itself, the insulation etc. But I'd like to get a rough idea on what other people are using

    Thanks :)

    I have my heating on for 15 hrs/day, consume ~ 7.5/9 litres/day and around 1500 litres/year, 4 bed cavity block house.

    I have my heating "on" for 15 hrs/day, consume ~ 4 litres/day and around 650 litres/year, 4 bed 2200 sgft cavity wall block bungalow.

...huge variation as so many variables at play

What? 15 hours heating a day? You guys need to install some smart thermostats.

I use a few hours a day keeping the house at 19' during the day and 20' in the evening. The house is currently at 21' with just over 3 hours on time used today

Our house is 3200sq feet, 10years old, we piled in insulation when self building.

Our oil is on 40 minutes in the morning, 20 minutes at 2:30 for the kids coming in and that’s all that is planned.

In the evenings is may run another 30 minutes or the stove would be lit. From April to October it is permanently off.

That's great, you hardly use 500 litres a year. What heats the water, I use oil to heat the water, I find it far cheaper than using the immersion.

    Huge house by the way!

Depends on the size of the jet in the burner...
Some burn half a gallon an hour, some three quarters.

    Who says we haven't? ;)

(Hint: look at the daily / annual consumption figures)

Wow, perhaps you need to add some more insulation, that's huge amount of oil usage in a year. Very expensive for you.

Old firebird indoor boiler uses 1lt per hour, measures over 3 years.

It's on 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening. Heats 9 double rads and water.

We make use of 2 stoves, 1 heats the kitchen and rads while the other is a small non boiler for the sitting room in the evening.

Our house is over 20 years old and about 1900 square feet. We've the original indoor boiler that runs for 3 hours in the morning and 6 hours in the evening. Total oil use last year was about 2,000 litres. I've ordered 1450 litres so far this year, so will probably be around the 2K mark again.

Its not half expensive enough, thats the problem . Its cheap heating , oil seems to be stuck at sixty bucks a barrel with shale oil putting a ceiling on things.
If it went to a hundred and sixty , I'd be compelled to cut down.

Solar 70% of the time, oil when it runs, rarely immersion

The key is in insulation here lads.

I had my 3 bed 100sqm semi d retro fitted with external insualtion, attic done and cavity pumped. Heating is on 2 hours a day max.

From my archives, I hit peak oil price in 2012.

So basically , if I read your chart correctly , we're back to 2005 in terms of kero price or even 2000?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,623 ✭✭✭John.G

Yes, my supplier is showing 43c/litre just now, so back to 2004/2005 prices.

I've the same size house but a cottage on its own, i spent about 5000 on insulation 6 years ago and did a big job throughout the house, best money i ever spent, about 750 liters of oil a year and 10 bags of coal keeps the place toasty

Its showing oil at fifty dollars a barrel in the futures market , right up to 2031 . So the likelihood is that oil will be cheap and plentiful for the next ten years at least.

    Unfortunately.

What software/app is used for that output? Have Hive on my gas boiler but website/app doesn’t show when heating was active, just the temperature per hour or per day.
