Went out to do the shopping and came home to find dog had been sick everywhere. She was licking paper wrappers from a box of quality street. Went to the box and only 4 sweets left. She is a chihuahua. She has been sick so much and took two hours of a break and getting sick again still picking wrappers with chocolate. Husband left box on floor with lid off beside couch. What should I do with her? Thinking I shouldn’t feed her in the morning anyway.

There's an emergency vet in UCD, take her there now. Don't wait . If she's eaten a lot she won't make it to morning.

Chocolate is supposed to be lethal for dogs especially small dogs, do a Google search for suggestions but a vet would probably be the best option.

Oh guys I have read it’s toxic but also that if she getting sick it’s a good thing as that’s what the vet would make her do.. I am hours away from Dublin local vet not answering either. Disaster!😢

Vet. I've treated and watched a dog die from chocolate poisoning, it's horrendous

Yes, chocolate is toxic to dogs, but once off and the dog getting sick is OK.

The problem is if the dog gets a liking to chocolate and starts to consume it regularly.

Make sure there's plenty of water available

You need to contact a vet immediately. I'm sure that's the last thing you want to hear. This happened to us 3 years ago on St. Stephen's Day with a far larger dog and a lesser amount of chocolate. Rang an on call vet and he did the calculations and told him we had to go meet him at the surgery. It was the last thing he wanted to be doing but it was necessary or our dog would have died.

Call UCD and read them out the ingredients list and give them your dog's weight. They will decide what you should do.

    That is very bad advice.

    That is very bad advice.

It's quality street. Mostly milk chocolate which is substantially less toxic than dark chocolate.

Quite a low level of cocoa solids in quality street too

Still toxic, but not anywhere near the level of dark chocolate

Dog has thrown up. Good sign.

Personally I would wait unless dog showing signs of stress

Guys thanks for all the help waiting to being her in but forgot to ask can I give her water while we are waiting as he is out on another call - she is very thirsty

We made it through the night. She is scouring everywhere looking for more, she has stopped getting sick and gets these random spurts of energy. Thanks to all for advise and not making me feel alone with her :-)

Still contact your vet and ask for advise, might need to go on a drip

Op, I hope you've been onto a vet, my 12kg dog nearly died after eating just over 100g of dark chocolate, his heart was racing when I discovered what he'd done, he was shaking, and vets induced vomiting, put him on a drip and gave him meds. He was in overnight, and he was lucky, symptoms can happen over days, as it takes a while for toxins to leave the system.

    Dark chocolate is extremely toxic.

    Milk chocolate substantially less toxic

The biggest danger is the dog gets a liking for chocolate and they are well able to sniff it out and get at it if left in an accessible place.

So for the op, it is extremely important to keep all your chocolate out of reach at all times as he may have got a liking for it.

    Thank you for this.

Some years ago when I was trading at a street market, a friend's dog stole ad ate a whole bar of milk chocolate from my lunch box.
    Feisty little Jack Russell...

I told the friend re the danger and he called his daughter who is a vet, gave her the details. Her judgement was that with that amount of milk chocolate there was no danger.

Nice bit was that the friend replaced my cheap bar with some exotic continental version. ;);)

Absolutely did the right thing. It's for a vet to make the call, judging by the dog's weight and level of toxicity. It's risky not to call, especially with a tiny dog. Glad the OP's dog is doing well. They were blessed that she vomited.

Also this was Quality Street, thinly coated with poor quality chocolate.

Always call the vet. Simple as. Don't play Russian roulette with a family member's life.
If a child swallowed something you'd deal with it immediately.

last year it was posted in my door, even though I had a "no unaddressed mail" sign up. So watch out this year.

Local election candidate Frank McNamara has been putting chocolate through letterboxes with his election literature. This evening a resident has had to take their dog to the vet after the dog ate the .
    Chocolate can kill dogs.
