My sister in law left the country last year and her car has been sitting at the house since. Its a good little car and I'd like to put her through NCT and sell her. The problem is the tax expired 31/05/19. Is there any way I could avoid paying the back tax?
If she was transferred into my name could I avoid paying the back tax? Could I just tax her from now if I did that?

As far as I know, if you transfer ownership, then arrears of tax does not need to be paid,.probably better wait till 1st February now as tax will start from then and tax for 3 months if intending to sell.

I wouldn’t bother transferring ownership until the new owner buys it (if you decide to sell it). Unnecessarily adding an extra owner to the car.

What kind of car is it?

She is VW polo 2006, mileage low enough. I see the going on Done Deal for over €1,000

Has your sister in law already signed the form to sell?
I can see potential buyers getting suspicious if it is not your name on the logbook.

Other than that, put it through NCT and see if someone is interested.

Isn't going to the NCT test a tax exemption?

Only if the car is declared off the road as far as I know.

Not certain on that. Do they let you drive without test as well?

Has to be declared off road. Yes you can drive to the test and you can drive from the test (provided the car isn't declared dangerous at test).

Can't declare off road with outstanding dues. So change of ownership will have to happen before declaration if they don't want tax liability.

Thanks for the feedback. Will the do the NCT now that the tax is out of date?
If I can get her through NCT without too much cost we will change ownership to me and sell her.
It definitely wouldn't be worth fixing her if the back tax had to be paid.

VW polo 2006 with 190k KM. What would she be worth with 12 months NCT and 6 months tax?

The NCT centre won't care about the tax issues.

However, you can't legally drive it to or from an NCT with no tax as it should declared off the road. So try not to get caught.

Don’t bother with the 6 months tax, stick 3 months in it if anything, even at that I probably wouldn’t spend the €100 as whoever buys it with value it at €100. It does make stuff like NCT and test drives a bit safer.

Price depends a lot on stuff like colour and condition.

If it’s Cadbury’s purple in base spec and a few scrapes you’d see them for €500. If it’s something nicer then you’d be looking €1000 and up.

Don’t fall into the trap of spending loads of money to get it through the test.
