Going looking at a 161 insignia 1.6 cdti at the weekend. Anything I should be looking out for?
They look a good car and seem very popular on the road. It has just shy off 100k miles.

    Thanks.

Someone in the trade on here mentioned before that some of these 1.6 whisper diesels are suffering timing chain issues and that it's a very expensive and labour intensive problem to fix.

I taught they had timing belts?
Is this a problem you can look out for? I'd imagine the chain goes your buggered.

1.6cdti's are definitely chain. The main symptom is a rattle noise on a cold start up.

    2.0cdti has a timing belt.

    Thanks selectamatic.
Does the chain have a change interval like a belt?

No it's supposed to last the lifetime of the car but some obviously don't.

What I will say is the astra with the same engine seems to be affected more by this than the insignia but then again the 1.6cdti is much more common in the astra.

Is there a certain year after which Insignias are reasonably reliable cars?
Is it only the 1.6 engine that gave trouble is the 2.0 as bad?

The early 2.0 is the one to avoid.

You can buy Ford Mondeos for similar money to Insignias, a far less risky option imo.
