Volvo s40 overheating

Last week I noticed my 2009 s40 1.6d was short on power, got into the car yesterday morning and heating is blowing cold. Finished work and on my way home the car started overheating. Car is starting fine anytime I’ve tried it.
I’ve booked it in with mechanic for Thursday and he has said it could be a few things but the more I read about it, it’s sounding like a head gasket.
If so would Anyone have any idea what the cost of having that replaced would be? I wanna be prepared to make a call on what to do when he calls me to let me know what it is. If it’s not worth fixing, I’ll be forced to change car.
