What are peoples take on this latest trend here in the north. Guys are offering livestock up for winning in a raffle. One example i seen yesterday was two well bred heifers which were pictured, all done through facebook where you have numbers 1-59 and you pick a number and pay £60. The numbers were all gone within 3 hours of being posted online
Now the owner of the animals stands to have £3540 in his pocket and there is the hassel of people picking numbers and not paying etc but is there any rules against this type of setup.

I know a case where man raffled a show type heifer at €40 a number(1-59)pocketed €2360-was getting around €1450 in mart couple months before. He left the heifer with winner and was bit lame.Winner had vet out twice and told had hurt on pelvis but had an underlying problem.Heifer died within 5-6 days, turns out she had severe pneumonia and was treated at sellers farm before he sold it.Now he won’t give chat to winner.Vet knew it pneumonia on sellers farm. The winner doesn’t seem to be taking it any further, and he’s out €40 for number and €70 for knackers.Lousy or what!

Heard of a lad winning a lorry this way. You’d be a long time building stock numbers though.

In order for these types of raffles to be legal in roi the organiser either has to be a charity or have a lotto license.

It sounds a bit like the joke about raffling a dead donkey. On a more serious note if the man in question gave the winner back his initial €40 plus vet and knackery fee's he was still well in profit versus the mart price. The whole raffling system has gotten very popular in recent months, every time I check book face there seems to be a chance to win a heifer, ewe's, car or similar for the price of a few drinks. It's not something I'd bother with but seemingly there's enough other's who would.
