Dell Vostro 1015 - no boot after CPU upgrade

    Good morning.

I have a Dell Vostro 1015 from a friend which was dead and they wanted to see if i could fix it up and upgrade it for them cheap. It would POST but the problem was a dead hard drive so I was to replace with a SSD, upgrade the CPU and install Windows 10.

I replaced the celeron CPU with a Core 2 T9600 from ebay, which I saw on a few forums should be compatible and is listed on the intel site as being compatible with the GM45 chipset this laptop uses.
Reassembled system board outside of the chassis for a bench test and it will power on but there is no boot or attempt to POST. Power leds are are power solid, and num and scroll locks flashing continuously. Dell support and various fora say this indicates a motherboard problem?

What might I be looking at here? Would an incompatible CPU trigger this?
Anyone know for sure if the T9600 is compatible with this system as I was taking a bit of a chance?

    Any advice appreciated.

Not sure but it is possible that a) the cpu is dead, b) the motherboard is dead, or c) the chipset supports the T9600 but needs a newer bios to do so.

Ultimately I would hardly bother. You can get 2nd hand 3rd gen i5 laptops for not much more than €100 on Ebay that are infinitely more powerful than an old T9600.

I get that good value might be had in getting a second hand laptop, but I enjoy the challenge of refurbishing these so i like to do whatever I reasonably can get them going.

Was booting up fine with a spare HDD and the celeron. I was very careful with disassembling and reassembling so I should think the MB is good.

I will rebuild it with the original cpu and see if it boots. Then I'll update the bios and try the T9600. If that fails then I'll just have to stick with the celeron.

Is it OK to run a system board outside of the chassis for testing?

Solved. display connector was not seated properly.

    All is fine now.
