Alright, this'll probably go down as the most 'stupid' question ever asked here  What ever. I simply Don't Know. So .....

I want to bolt two strips of metal together, sandwiching some mesh between them.

Should I use washers  (Yes: I simply don't understand the principle behind washers. No one's ever told me that)

    Thanks :)

Metal washers can be used to stop the bolt head or nut wearing the sheet metal or even pulling through it.

They can also be used as a spacer on the bolt if you don't have thread / good thread all the way.

There are other types that can be used to seat, seal or lock.

Thanks, Purgative. My steel straps are pre drilled. I don't know how big the holes are. But, I'll try bolts on them, in the shop.

I guess a washer, either side, will also allow a better closure / grip without ~ as ye say ~ any danger of a borderline fit pulling through.

This whole part of the job is very small. Probably needing a dozen nut / bolts at the most. And, it's all dead lightweight.

But, I honestly can't remember the last time an aspect of a project has caused me so much grief! :o

In a project like this they can also help prevent nuts from backing off by giving them a flush surface to press against.

If that might be an issue in this project, though, could be worth your while getting some nylon lock nuts

See! I Do act on all this.

The little socket set is still an active operation. Hope to have it next week though

Look on the bright side (I tell myself!) Time I have all the bits together, to finish this trap? The bloody rooks will be rearing young again!!! But; That makes them easier to catch. So, every cloud. Silver linings and all that :)

For the record: Trained and licensed Ringer. No birds will be harmed as a result of all this. Quite the contrary.

:D Better than that, mate; I'll show ye the thing holding 'The Black Mass' ~ or an individual constituent of it, anyway!

Rang Halfords back, today. Have reserved the socket set and my mates girl is gonna pick it up for me :) PITA that I won't get my hands on it for Another week now. But, this Is bloody Leitrim!

Christ! Would ye believe it?! I grabbed a crafty snap shot of 'The Black Mass' today. Through the open door, as opposed to the dirty window? Figured it'd make a showable shot.

Just looked at it. Bloody gate bar ~ which just so happens to be black! ~ cuts right through the mass!!! All I've got is what looks like a black smear! Never mind.
