Aer lingus’s dodgy website/app wont allow me buy insurance for a flight I’ve booked that I may have to cancel and want to be protected.

Who’s good to use for this?

Travel insurance usually only covers you for holidays booked after the coverage is taken out.

They also don't typically payout for flights that you decide to cancel.

Really? the Aerlingus website said it would protect cancelled Flights up to 5000 euro but that’s just if the airline cancels it? So if a family member dies and you can’t go on the flight it’s basically rough ****?

Your covered for that, my step dad passed away last year. The funeral was on the same weekend we were due to be in Poland at a wedding. The flights were fully refunded by our travel insurance. Ours is via an Ulster Bank Ufirst account.

Ok, seems like something I would have to research first. I hopefully won’t have to cancel the flight due to a funeral but even a decline in my dying mother’s condition would change my plans so need the protection.

If anyone knows an insurer that definitely covers this event then please post.

Unfortunately, I don't believe you will get cover for a flight cancellation in your situation. If your mother is dying then, according to any insurance company, that is a 'pre-existing condition' and a travel insurance policy will not cover a flight cancellation caused by a decline in her condition or if she passes.

This is correct. You won’t get coverage for what you’re looking for.

Most decent travel insurance policies will cover what you're looking for as standard, it usually comes under the heading, Cancellation, Curtailment or Rearrangement if it becomes necessary to cancel, curtail or rearrange your holiday due to the death, serious injury, sudden illness etc of you or your immediate family, I recently purchased an annual multi trip policy from Aviva for my family for less than €60

What you will have to check though is that you are covered because you are already aware that your mother is I'll, I don't know the answer to that.

The key word there is "sudden". Sudden illness, not sudden decline. Insurance protects against the unexpected, not the likely. I don't think you can get cover for what you want OP, you'd be better off booking flexible flights.

    And?

Did you mean to tell us that you downloaded the terms and conditions, read them and you'd like to advise us that there is a clause there about pre-existing conditions?

    Maybe not....

Pre existing conditions are often not covered for those named on the policy & travelling, in this case the OP's mother is ill, not travelling & I assume not named on the policy that hasn't been purchased yet, I was just advising that in normal circumstances a pretty standard decent policy would cover the OP in the case of a parent passing away & the OP having to cancel or curtail the trip BUT I did advise that I wasn't sure if he/she would be covered as they knew that a parent was already seriously ill & to check this out in advance
