I'm looking at buying an Avensis automatic, not sure yet whether it will be saloon or estate. Looking at the UK where there is a good selection. I'm going auto as SWMBO has a bad knee and loves autos. A lot of the 2010 to 2012 models appear to be 1.8 engines. So I'm looking for comments about Toyota and auto gearbox experiences. Thanks.

I wouldn't be a fan of that automatic gearbox (CVTs are nasty, they feel like a manual with a slipping clutch), but it will be a very safe and reliable choice. Just make sure you're happy with how the electric parking brake operates in them, it doesn't automatically engage when you come to a stop (at least on the manual versions), it's in an awkward location and it's just not as smooth as such systems are in rival cars (VW's one in particular is excellent).

    I’d recommend one.

Thanks for comments. It will be used by wife primarily as I use motorbike. She has a small commute (10 minutes in suburbia) to work so I'm very slow to go diesel due to short runs.

Errr not sure about all that. I have one and it works exavtly like a similar setup in a Passat. Only thing it doesn't have is hill hold. Comes on and off automatically and works perfectly smooth. Never gave any trouble either unlike the Pisshat one.

New Passat handbrake is a lot more advanced than the one on the B6

Fair enough, the B6 should be burned with fire.
