just out of interest, when TV stations broadcast a movie do they just simply use a dvd or blu-ray disc?

The HD version has been around for 15 years. They probably have to pay more for the rights to brodcast the HD version. So instead, pull out the VHS version from the vaults. The license payers won't notice.

They normally purchase high definition MXF or MOV files and a license to broadcast from the distribution service.
But if they already have an old tape copy from 1989, a license to re-show it in that format is peanuts.
