ESB connection deadline looming

    Hello Folks,

I am renovating a house but have been out of action due to an accident for a year almost. I had the power disconnected and 2 years disconnection is up in a few months. I am nowhere near to even first fix electrical yet and I am worried. I am told it's very expensive after 2 years and also the requirements are much stricter as regarded as new connection. This is an old cottage where the power line comes in at the chimney. I have been using a generator for power tools up to now.

    My questions are:

    1) Are the ESB likely to extend this deadline for me?

2)Is there a way to get in power temporarily now to provide power to complete the renovation.

3)If I have temporary power will this in any way affect the above deadline or make no difference?

I am simply not sure how to proceed at the moment.

    Many thanks for your time.

    John

A buddy of mine is doing something similar, renovating house with ESB to chimney. He wanted power on site while working.

He had a small shed pretty close to house so he had a meter box built into the wall of it. Got electrician to wire up a circuit board in it along with 2 outdoor sockets, one 32A and one 16A. Blue type IP 54

Ran a red ESB duct to the nearest pole. Paid ESB €420 to move the meter into the new box. Now he has power on site. When the job is done he is going to feed power to the house from the new box. No need to move it again.

Solar panels and a few rare unusual obscure Nickel Iron batteries then tell the ESB to take a run and jump

As CJPM says, apply for the disconnected meter to be moved into a nearby shed or build a small free standing wall that can carry a meter box that will be sited in a final position at the edge of the site etc, convenient to run a cable into the house when needed (it can serve as a builders supply as is) and convenient to run a duct to the Esb pole. The reconnection can be done on the same day so all can be sorted relatively easily. Talk to your electrician about issuing a cert for an alteration and builders supply etc in cabinet

Also no chance in hell of getting an extension to the two year limit

Hi so what do you do for electricity when you get a dark and dreary week in December?

After 6 months you will have to get recertification anyway.. However electricians have to recertify any new work the only extracharge will be connection fee. You have saved about 350/ year because of the disconnection anyway.

You can however get the electrician to install fuse box and certify that. He can recertify whole job when it is complete. ESB are hard and fast with there rules. Easiest thing maybe is to price a reconnection and ask what the reconnection charge for when it is longer two years disconnection
