Advice on buying a car

Hi, I'm going to see a used car on Saturday and I'm wondering what type of payment I should use if I want to go ahead and buy it.
Obviously banks wont be open on Saturday so what are my options?
Does a bank transfer (phone banking) go through straight away or does it take a day or so?
Or would a bank draft be better?
    What would you recommend?

How much is it for? You can pay €25k on visa debit.

Depends is it private or trade deal?
Private - no way would anyone take a bank transfer on a sat, (won't normally go through until the next business day) and let you drive away. Private sellers are reluctant with bank drafts because of all of the fakes in the last few years as well.

Dealer/trade - bank draft or card are your best bets. Leaves a nice noticeable paper trail too.

You could always ask what's the best cash price :' D hahah

Are you buying from a dealer or privately?

Sorry, should have said it's a private sale.

Do you think it would be best to give a deposit of a couple of hundred maybe and go back monday with the rest in a draft?

I cannot see any private seller taking a draft, too open to fraud these days.

How much roughly speaking is the car costing?

I put quite a bit more than that on my card last month. Was quite surprised it went through

Car is around €7000, might just have a look on Saturday and if it goes well I'll go back on Monday morning.

    Thanks all for the advice!

Seller may want €500+ to hold till monday. At €7,000 not a hope would I personally take anything bar cash that would be going straight to an atm that takes judgement.
Get cash, ultimately up to the seller what they accept but if you show up with a draft after banking hours you may be told where to go.

Never rush into buying a car. Look it over, test drive it and have someone knowledgeable look at it too, then if your happy with the price leave a deposit to secure it.

Have you a Revolut account, if seller also has an account that should work and payment is instant.

I wouldn't be giving a private seller any deposits, if they sell to someone else you will struggle to get the money back.

The bigger issue with buying on a Saturday would be insurance.

For a private sale with that money I'd insist on seeing photo ID of seller that it matches name on the logbook. Good idea to also check on motortax.ie if the vehicle has recently changed ownership which could be an indication the car has issues and seller wants to offload quickly. Also put reg in to NCT.it to confirm whatever NCT on it is legit and not from the thousands of genuine discs which has been stolen from the NCT centres.

It's also worth doing a Cartell report to check for outstanding finance.
Also get someone who can give the car a proper mechanical check over as if there are any issues after the money has changed hands, they're yours!
